How the hummingbird helped

- Practice, Practice, Practice

I had a lovely learning experience with a hummingbird. It happened almost a decade ago, during a time when I was having trouble walking up and down stairs freely and had been listening and praying diligently for inspiration.

I was working outside and went into the garage to get a tool. I heard a buzzing and figured it was a big bee. But then I saw a hummingbird repeatedly hitting the glass in the window, trying to get out. I opened both large bay doors so that it could fly out, but it didn’t. So I took the screen out of the window and opened the window. The bird simply sat on the door frame. I sighed, went outside, and did some work on the woodpile. Upon returning to the garage, I did not see the little bird.

I closed the doors, but then the hummingbird appeared on the ceiling. So I opened the doors halfway and went to get a broom to gently encourage it to fly to the doors. It sat on the door frame and waited, then flew to the ladder and sat at my shoulder height. I had the broom in one hand and, after all this effort to help the bird take to the skies, thought, “How can I reach this dear little bird and help free it without frightening it?”
