Exploring in depth what Christian Science is and how it heals.

THE TRUE REFORMATION

Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven.

THE SURE HEALING

Sometimes we hear those to whom Christian Science is new, talking somewhat as follows: "I wonder why I do not get the healing. I have quit taking medicine, I am doing everything the practitioner asks me to do.

There are, of course, in every calling, those who go about the work of the day before them, doing it according to the rules of their craft, and asking no questions of the past, or of the future, or of the aim and end to which their special labor is contributing. These often consider and call themselves practical men.

THE BEAUTIES AND BOUNTIES OF NATURE

Many beginners in Christian Science, on hearing the statement that there is no matter and no material universe, find it hard to accept this teaching, not only because it requires them to deny the testimony of their senses and so-called "common sense," but because it appears to require them to believe that God is not the author of the beauties and bounties of nature, which has been one of their most cherished convictions. Respecting this position, there is a false view which must be given up, and there is a true view which lifts the beauties and harmonies of nature to a higher level of understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment.

THE HIGHER LAW

The trial of a case in court results in a verdict and judgment or decree in favor of one party and against the adverse party. It very frequently follows that the one against whom the judgment or decree is rendered, carries the case to the appellate court.

THE SUBJUGATION OF SENSE TESTIMONY

The argument is urged against Christian Science that it denies the testimony of the physical senses, and for this reason is not entitled to serious consideration by thinking people. Since it is conceded by "thinking people" that these same erring senses are the only channels through which evil can be cognized, and that they do not and cannot see God, or Spirit, which is the safer course to pursue, to accept or to question what they say? When these senses say that man is sick, which is the more rational course to pursue, to submit to their evidence, or to disbelieve it, and then do all within our power to prove that they are false witnesses? Were they God-given, would we have any right to try to change their verdict at any point by appealing either to God or to man for help? The very admission that mortals need help, is a declaration against sense testimony and indicates a desire to have this testimony reversed rather than acquiesced in.

MIRACLES

There is perhaps no word in the language which has been less understood or which has excited more controversy than the word miracle. The examination of it, whether from a critical, scientific, or purely historical aspect, seems always to have been capable of arousing the intemperance of superstition or the derision of skepticism.

THE WILDERNESS

After the children of Israel left Egypt, forty years elapsed before they entered the Promised Land, and the greater part of this forty years was spent in the wilderness wandering. This wilderness epoch has been recognized and used as an illustration of a certain stage of experience that comes to every individual seeker and finder of Truth.

MOSES

FROM early childhood until the writer gained some understanding of Christian Science, gleaned from its textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, it was always a puzzle to him how the patriarchs and prophets were to be saved, since they had not seen the Christ.

Christian Science teaches that a vociferous appeal to what some seem to think God to be, has no more efficacy in destroying a disease than would a loud cry to the basic law of mathematics have in solving a problem in arithmetic. To help his pupil the teacher must apply his knowledge of this law of numbers by mentally solving the problem in his own thought, and as this solution proceeds in his own mind, he would make visibly manifest on the board his mental concept of the rule and method which necessarily precedes the visible expression.
