Testimonies of Healing
I first became acquainted with Christian Science when I read the testimony section in a copy of The Herald of Christian Science ; this part of the magazine was what most attracted my attention. I am grateful for the hope it gave me.
When I was about twelve years old, a friend invited me to attend a Christian Science Sunday School. I have been a student of Christian Science ever since.
We read in Galatians: "Because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ" ( 4:6, 7 ).
I had gone to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew my driver's license. At one point I was asked to read from a board at a close distance.
One of the nicest things about Christian Science healing is that it indicates the tender, loving presence of God. Healing itself is always appreciated, but to me it is often the feeling of being so beloved of God that stays with me and is often more meaningful than the alleviation of a physical condition.
My wife and I were the dinner guests that evening. Immediately after the incident we each began to pray silently.
One of the greatest blessings of my life was attending a Christian Science Sunday School, learning to call on God and trust His guidance. I have had numerous physical healings, including ones of back and knee injuries, skin problems, and digestive difficulties.
Several years ago I suddenly started having very severe pain in one of my knees; I couldn't move it at all. These passages from Isaiah were part of the week's Bible Lesson: "Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees" ( 35:3 ); and "Unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear" (45:23).
Even though I had experienced many healings as a young person when my parents or a practitioner would pray for me, there came a time when Christian Science didn't seem to satisfy all my needs. This was especially the case when I would pray for myself, without the help of others.
I first knew of Christian Science many years ago when my mother was seriously ill with cancer. She had already had one operation, and was terrified when she was told that unless she had another one she would die.
