"Man is the expression of God's being."

From the May 1958 issue of The Christian Science Journal

"Man is the expression of God's being." This quotation from page 470 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, changed the whole course of my life.

Almost thirty years ago I was ill with tuberculosis of the lungs. One lung was said to be partially destroyed and the other affected. While in a railway waiting room, I picked up a Christian Science Sentinel and began to read it. I was immediately impressed by the beauty of the reading matter, and there followed a great sense of comfort. Then my thought was startled as I came to the above quotation from the textbook. Though I did not understand it, the words were like a shaft of light piercing the darkness. I took the Sentinel home to read again.

Three weeks later I was stricken with what was diagnosed as a fatal attack of hemorrhage of the lungs and was taken to a sanatorium for tubercular patients. My family was informed that I could not live through the night. In the early hours I believed that I was about to pass on. Though quite unafraid, I was greatly puzzled. I thought: "What dreadful thing can I have done to be so afflicted? God cannot have sent this thing, for God is Love."
