"THE READINESS IS ALL"

From the January 1963 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Shakespeare gave Hamlet the line, "The readiness is all," he must have grasped the relative unimportance of the time factor in any delayed action. Getting ready for any conduct may be slow or fast in time; but achievement matures in proportion to receptivity. Time thus is not a factor in accomplishment, whether slow or fast.

In a By-Law in the Manual of The Mother Church, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy, says (Art. XXX, Sect. 7), "I recommend that each member of this Church shall strive to demonstrate by his or her practice, that Christian Science heals the sick quickly and wholly, thus proving this Science to be all that we claim for it." Christ Jesus over and over proved the instantaneous action of the Christ in healing all manner of diseases among the people. And the Christ is represented in these words (Rev. 3:20): "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him."

It is evident that Jesus healed those that were ready or that he could make ready. The Manual By-Law above puts a mandate upon every member of The Mother Church to see to it that he is ready and that his patient is ready for the healing Christ to enter and heal quickly and wholly. This readiness means not only a receptivity but also a cooperativeness, not only a passivity but an activity.
