Church in Action

The relevance of Christian Science

From the February 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The meeting held in Boston, August 24-26, was sponsored by the College Organization Section of the Youth Division of the Department of Branches and Practitioners of The Mother Church.

Among the speakers was Howard P. Jones, former Ambassador to Indonesia and present Chancellor of the East-West Center, Honolulu, Hawaii. He described how the diplomat helps determine the issues of war and peace. "Ever since the day of Isaiah's ringing statement, 'And they shall beat their swords into plowshares . . .: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more' (Isa. 2:4), the establishment of peace on earth has been an ideal to be cherished in the hope of its realization at some distant day. Today, however, this goal has become a practical necessity if man as we know him is to survive. A Christian Scientist in the diplomatic service [must] bear the goal of peace ever in mind."

Actor Alan Young let the audience in on some of the spiritual thinking that has enabled him to face the stiff challenges of the entertainment world, citing one instance when he agreed, three hours before curtain time, to substitute for the star performer in a musical comedy he had seen only once. He didn't know the lines or dance numbers, but looked to God for help. Later the producer remarked to the company, "In thirty years on the stage, I have never seen anything as marvelous as this." Mr. Young gave Christian Science the credit. Referring to the action of divine Mind, he said, ". . . Man is not an actor, nor a reactor. He responds to the ability of God. This takes away all sense of personal responsibility."
