Universal Love Impels Church Expansion

From the July 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Human knowledge is expanding more rapidly than ever before in human history. And human troubles are multiplying no end. What does human knowledge say as to the cause of material man, whose thinking is so rapidly expanding, and whose troubles are so rapidly increasing?

Dr. Allan Sandage of the staff of Palomar Observatory is quoted as saying, "Something happened, independent of any theory, about ten billion years ago, which changed the world into its present state from an unknown previous state." The New York Times Magazine, June 12, 1966; Billions of years later forms of material life appeared, and, through material evolution, eventuated in physical man. Dr. Vannevar Bush, preeminent physical scientist, writing in Fortune magazine, says, "It is generally accepted that life began with the appearance of the first self-reproducing chemical molecule."Fortune, May, 1965, p. 118; Origin unexplained!

A million or more years ago, it is believed, this primitive man began to use stones for tools. Self-preservation was, for a long period, his chief occupation. Times were hard! While certain material forces evolved him, other material forces soon dissolved him. He was trapped in a prison house of destructive forces, with no possibility of escape. Today these same material forces continue to make and to destroy his sophisticated descendants, the race of mortals. Production and destruction remain the fatalistic pattern cyclically imposed on physical man.
