Fifteen years ago, Mrs. Jones was the only Negro in Savannah, Georgia, interested in Christian Science.
She had been healed with the help of a Christian Science practitioner, and had joined The Mother Church. Then she began attending the local branch Church of Christ, Scientist. As time passed, several other people of her race had healings and came to church, too. But because of the traditional separation of the races these newcomers felt uncomfortable attending an all-white church, even though some of its members had gone out of their way to encourage them.
They withdrew and started an informal group of their own. "We felt the need to come out and gain a better sense of brotherhood, to let God make us ready for an equal growth in the church and for loving service to mankind," a group spokesman said.
