Church in Action

The urban environment

From the August 1971 issue of The Christian Science Journal

A double-barreled spiritual attack on the complex social problems of New York City was launched last May by New Yorkers who are Christian Scientists.

It came in the form of two free public talks on urban environmental problems by Jane O. Robbins of Boulder, Colorado, and James Spencer of Detroit, Michigan, both members of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship.

These novel "question and answer lectures," with audience participation, were sponsored jointly by the Churches of Christ, Scientist, in Manhattan. The joint committee includes professional advertising and promotion talent. Widely publicized and well attended, the talks were given at Hunter College Auditorium (capacity 2,200) on May 4 and May 13. Although they were especially written for the New York area, they would be applicable to almost any of today's beleaguered cities.
