THE CHURCH IN ACTION

"We are now awake . . ."

From the October 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

It would take volumes to report fully on the good that has flowed and still is flowing from the meetings held in branch churches and societies on June 6 in connection with the 1983 Annual Meeting of The Mother Church. A number of reports and letters from the churches, telling of the meetings, have reached Boston. The range of responses indicates deep-seated spiritual renewal.

Here's one example, from a branch church member: "After seeing the film [Branch Church: A Design for Healing, provided by The Mother Church for the meetings], I felt a desire to express more inspired originality ... in my thought and work in church, not destroying any of the 'landmarks,' but being sure it isn't tradition or pharisaism that would limit my concept of church. . . . Listening to Spirit is church [activity], as is realizing that attraction is a quality of Mind—and this is what my line of thinking can be at this time." The church this member belongs to had decided not to have a discussion after the film, but asked those attending to depart quietly and in prayer, and to fill out an evaluation form at home after they had done some "thought-searching."

Another member from the same church wrote: "I've gained another dear glimpse into the fact that this business of church is the business of [proving what man is as God's] reflection, pure,—and ongoing in goodness."
