Poems

Well, Naaman . . .

From the March 1983 issue of The Christian Science Journal

you had it all worked out . . . you knew
exACTly how it all should go!
start to finish here's the way to do it . . .
[hard to tell we're doing that sometimes . . .
it seems so clear just what is needed, right . . .]
and not just that . . . you knew
just how it shouldn't go . . . "let's watch
        miraculous drama! thunderlightning and
                                       results!!!"
                                       [like—be reasonable, do it my way . . .]

It didn't go like that, though, did it, friend . . .
but did your raging help?
                                              or turning back . . . ?

or listening again . . .
      and dropping all that knowing-all-yourself . . .
          (from tiny view, perhaps?)
          (tiny world-wealth-fame-position view?)
      and going down . . .
          (in self-importance?)
          (only-person-with-the-answer-itis?)
listening . . .
and hearing worlds of Love behind the words of
     servant [boss . . . or child . . . or
                     mother-in-(father-in-)law] . . .
