Concern for individual safety and security is mounting in our society today. We constantly hear reports in the media of adults and children who are innocent victims of either intentional or random acts of violence. In countries torn apart by civil war, great suffering has been wreaked on the populace. On the one hand, many people fear for the safety of home and loved ones. On the other, there often seems to be a morbid fascination with acts of violence. Both fear and the mesmeric attraction to violence create an atmosphere that fosters crime.
But crime and violence aren't the only things that make people feel unsafe and insecure. The threat of disease, supported by statistics projecting that certain numbers of people will contract various illnesses, makes many feel that their life and health are vulnerable to forces beyond their control. Where can genuine security be found?
Bible students throughout the ages have found in the ninety-first Psalm a place of refuge, succor, and strength. See Ps. 91:1, 2, 9-11, 13, 14, 16. The first verse of this powerful message reads, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
