The continuity of creativity

From the March 1998 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The Holy Scriptures speak frequently of God's living, active presence as Life. Divine Life is the source of our liveliness. It enables us to experience the continuity of Life. Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mrs. Eddy's chief work giving statement to Christian Science, observes, "We all must learn that Life is God." Science and Health, p. 496. Life can also be seen as the only creative energy. Ever new views of God's creation must continue to appear throughout eternity, because God is eternal Life. True existence is actually the continuous unfoldment of good in consciousness. This unfoldment may appear to us as though God is ever creating something new; but God is, in fact, revealing to us in new and fresh ways what has always existed as reality.

In the first chapter of Genesis, creation is spoken of as taking place on a number of evenings and mornings. The Glossary of Science and Health throws light on this pattern. This chapter is one of the great features of the book. In it we find metaphysical interpretations of words employed in the Bible.

For instance, the word evening is explained: "Mistiness of mortal thought; weariness of mortal mind; obscured views; peace and rest." Ibid., p. 586. The order of these statements in this interpretation could suggest a progression of thought. When one gains the humility to come out of a foggy state of thought, when one is tired of mortal mind's inability to satisfy, when one perceives he or she is not seeing things clearly, one may be ready for the peace of mind that comes through trusting God to reveal what is needed.
