CREATION

The rhythm of God

Watching orchestra members follow the conductor's lead, I saw a parallel to the harmony of God's creation.

From the June 1999 issue of The Christian Science Journal

For several seconds before the conductor picked up the baton and raised his arms, the members of the orchestra and the entire audience were silent. Then, in the maestro's own time, and in accord with his own comprehension of the music, he began conducting, drawing one section of the orchestra after another into the intricate rhythm and order of the piece.

The audience heard and felt the beautiful harmony, which was brought out under the conductor's control. Had each musician expressed his or her own sense of how the piece should be played, the result would have been a mess. But they all followed one authority; no one opposed what the conductor was trying to convey.

Watching this performance, I felt a parallel between the orchestra's harmony and rhythm, and the harmonious rhythm of God's creation. God's sovereignty has no opponent. Were one to exist, the divine rhythm would be broken. But with one Mind, God, in control, all creation is included in, but does not oppose, the rhythm of God. From the beginning, no power has existed to interrupt God's ever-moving, ever-flowing spiritual harmony. Infinite divine intelligence, or wisdom, is in absolute control.
