PRACTICAL SCIENCE

A CONVERSATION WITH COLLEEN DOUGLASS

From the May 2010 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Talk to Christian Science practitioner and teacher Colleen Douglass for only a few minutes and you quickly get a read on what keeps her life on track: her dedication to Christian Science. And her love for family.

As the stepmother of three children, Colleen has had plenty of practice in both arenas. She and her husband, Barry, live in Los Angeles, California. "Our home is very inclusive. We often have friends or relatives living with us. We've also had a number of kids from France stay here," she says, adding that "one of them came back five different summers." And ten Navajo kids who call Colleen "Grandma" form part of her open-arms family, too. "They know they're always welcome, so they often come hang out with Grandma Co and Grandpa Barry in their California home."

Colleen also writes extensively about Christian Science and contributes frequently to the Journal, Christian Science Sentinel, and The Christian Science Monitor. In keeping with her lifelong love of teaching (she taught junior high and high school English), she became a teacher of Christian Science in 1997.Before entering the public practice of Christian Science healing over 20 years ago, Colleen worked extensively in the business world where she developed marketing and communications programs for domestic and international clients, primarily in the area of travel and tourism. During college, she ran a summer recreation and education program on the Navajo reservation in Arizona. She credits her experiences with various ethnicities, both in the United States and abroad, for giving her "a heightened sense of the universality of the truths revealed in Christian Science."
