The spirit of evangelism needed now

From the May 2011 issue of The Christian Science Journal

According to news reports, there has been a marked surge of interest in evangelical religious practices in recent years. In light of this trend, one might ask what the Church of Christ, Scientist, has to offer in these times. Do Christian Scientists think in terms of evangelic worship and practice?

Gospel-inspired evangelism finds fresh and distinct expression in the teachings of Christian Science. Mary Baker Eddy once referred to the Christ Science she discovered and set forth in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures as “the pure evangelic truth” ( Retrospection and Introspection, p. 65) and said of the Church she founded, “Its essence is evangelical” ( The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 342).

Christian Science is the vital, life-transforming Christianity of the Gospels. It asks that we take to heart and accept, to an extent mirroring that of first-century Christians, Jesus’ central message: “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matt. 10:7).” Within the pages of Science and Health is the full, revelatory disclosing of this kingdom, or realm of spiritual reality, which the Master showed to be present in all its glory, to be understood and experienced through healing and regeneration.
