FAQ on the Healing Practice

Christian Science teachers respond to frequently asked questions that have come up at workshops on becoming a Christian Science practitioner.

Could you please talk about handling resistance to Christian Science as a part of treatment?

From the January 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Q: Could you please talk about handling resistance to Christian Science as a part of treatment?

A: Everyone thrives in supportive environments—and most would agree that obstructive environments often undermine effective outcomes. Because Christian Science treatment operates in the realm of consciousness alone, the mental environment surrounding a case needs to be addressed to ensure success in spiritual healing. That means handling so-called “resistance.”

So what is this “resistance” to Christian Science treatment? It may appear as one’s own doubt, or as disbelief in the patient (or the disbelief of others around the patient) that spiritual healing is effective. It can appear as harboring discouragement, fear, or entrenched universal beliefs in material conditions—or even openly disruptive behavior. It also appears as the world’s hatred of Truth and Love—arrogantly, or far more subtly, dismissing spiritual healing as ineffective.
