The Holy Ghost: antidoting the poison of willpower

From the November 2012 issue of The Christian Science Journal

This article was originally published on JSH-Online on September 17, 2012.

In order to neutralize a poison and destroy its effects, one needs the precise antidote. Who would deny, then, that the world needs the precise antidote for the poison of willpower?

Depraved, unbridled willfulness is largely the unseen impulse behind corruption, greed, cruelty to animals, bullying, revenge, oppression, mad ambition, and more. Willfulness is the instigator of most phases of criminal activity and the real sponsor of the newest mode of warfare—international terrorism.

This is not to say that various phases of willfulness haven’t been the sponsors of warfare over the centuries. But wars have historically been fought between and among specific countries—making the enemy easy to identify. The terrorism of the 20th and 21st centuries presents enemies that seem much harder to identify.
