In my own study and practice of Christian Science I’ve really come to appreciate how cultivating a spiritual sense of hospitality strengthens our ability to heal. From beginning to end, the Bible is full of accounts of hospitality, and often such hospitality is linked to remarkable cases of healing.
A dictionary gives the word hospitable three essential components: (1) “given to generous or cordial reception of guests,” (2) “offering a pleasant or sustaining environment,” (3) “readily receptive” (Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 10th Edition).
The three-fold nature of this definition is exactly the type of hospitality Abraham displayed to the visitors who arrived outside his tent when he and his wife, Sarah, were living in the plains of Mamre (see Genesis 18). And it was his spiritual sense of hospitality that led to one of the first healings recorded in the Bible.
