SEEING is often synonymous with understanding. A common expression in everyday life is, "I see," meaning, "I understand or comprehend." When Jesus said (Matt. 13:16), "But blessed are your eyes, for they see," he had been explaining that he spoke in parables because the people closed their eyes and ears to his teachings, and he was commending the disciples upon their open or receptive thought, which brought spiritual understanding.
In the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy elucidates the truth which Jesus taught. In her definition of God in the Glossary of the textbook she includes the word "all-seeing." She writes (p. 587): "God. The great I am; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence." She understood God to be the only creator or cause, the source of all faculties, the fountain of all good, and the infinite All expressing His deific nature in man and the universe.
God, the only cause, causes man to see, to perceive all that is real and knowable. Man in God's likeness sees because God sees, and nothing can change this spiritual fact. There is one sight, the indivisible discernment of the all-knowing and all-seeing Mind, which is God, and each child of God reflects this sight individually. One who understands this is blessed with good human eyesight.
Man has no faculties of his own but reflects the perfect faculties of Soul as a sunbeam in its individual shining reflects the powers of the sun. The sunbeam does not make a separate shining of its own but is an individual expression of the sunlight. The physical human eye has no more power to see than a pair of glasses lying on a table, but one's reflection of true sight supports and preserves normal human sight.
In the human experience of seeing, eyesight is good or poor according to the concepts controlling thought. Improving concepts do not change one's true identity or being, because it is already perfect, but they do improve one's viewpoint and its resulting objectification.
The true fact made active in consciousness will take possession of one's mentality because the fact is imbued with divine power, and the resulting better mental state will objectify itself in a better human body and more harmony in human affairs. The truth made active in thought acts as law to govern one, and the human body responds in better health; that is, the truth brings to light what has been true of spiritual selfhood all along, and this enlightenment is symbolized in a better human experience.
A student of Christian Science began to see dark spots before her eyes. She had learned that discord is never in the human body, but is in a false mental state expressing itself on the body, as a film pictures itself on a screen. She began watching her thought and found that she had been mesmerized by the temptation to indulge in criticism. She realized that this criticism was seeing dark spots in God's perfect creation. When this habit was thoroughly corrected, the physical condition disappeared.
True sight is spiritual and perfect and is expressed in spiritual understanding, perception, good judgment, perspicacity, and intelligent conclusions. It is infinite and eternal and is not subject to loss, impairment, or misuse. Our knowing this, our making this spiritual fact individually recognized, acts as law to relieve thought of the burden of false belief that there are life and sight in matter. Being unburdened and unblocked, thought acts to invigorate its expression, and the eyes, the natural channels for this expression, respond to the harmony necessary for them to manifest normal sight humanly.
Congenital defects are corrected when it is recognized that man is not generated by mortal mind to live in matter, but is created by the divine Mind to express itself in perfection, and one does not in reality carry on mortal weaknesses, abnormalities, and pressures under a law of heredity, but he possesses now all the qualities and faculties of Spirit.
Supposititious mortal mind imposes various limitations through suggestive arguments. It always argues in the first person in an endeavor to fool one into believing that the argument is actually one's own thought. It may say: "I am getting along in years; I ought to have glasses"; or, "I have always been nearsighted because my mother was"; or, "My eyes do not focus properly; I need corrective lenses."'
God has endowed us with the ability to think correctly and scientifically and so to see correctly. True vision comes from God, and we find it by seeing good, by seeing from a spiritual viewpoint; clear vision comes as we see Truth distinctly as All; and adequate vision comes from divine Love as we see and think universally rather than selfishly or in a limited way.
To see, we need light. Christian Science teaches us that spiritual light is a quality of Mind. The command, "Let there be light" (Gen. 1:3), calls upon the perceiving power of Mind to reveal that which is spiritually true.
Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 393), "When Jesus declares that 'the light of the body is the eye,' he certainly means that light depends upon Mind, not upon the complex humors, lenses, muscles, the iris and pupil, constituting the visual organism." Whenever there seems to be a lack, it is not a need of matter but of spiritual inspiration, and a consecrated study of Truth will fill the seeming need.
We strengthen our sight when we steadfastly refute every error presented by the physical senses and replace it with that which God knows. In Romans we read (13:13), "Let us walk honestly, as in the day." Let us walk in the light of spiritual creation. We quicken our thought and enliven our sight when we include all mankind in our interest and compassion and do not allow selfishness to blind us to our brother's need.
Normal seeing results from a state of spiritual accord with all-seeing Love. Mrs. Eddy says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 354): "A little more grace, a motive made pure, a few truths tenderly told, a heart softened, a character subdued, a life consecrated, would restore the right action of the mental mechanism, and make manifest the movement of body and soul in accord with God."
By lifting thought into accord with God, we broaden our perspective. A man on a mountain sees more than one in a valley and so observes more scenery. The same is true when thought is lifted from material to spiritual concepts. Abraham was told to lift up his eyes and look in all directions, and all the land that he could see would be his. All the spiritual concepts which we make our own uplift our thought and widen our spiritual vision.
