Divine Love’s law of supply

The need for right supply is such an important issue because it relates to every facet of human experience, both on an individual and a global level. Supply needs to be demonstrated in terms of having enough food and clean water for a growing population, enough financial resources for individuals and municipalities, jobs for people to earn a decent living, affordable housing for all, and even spiritual inspiration to draw on so that we can find healing in difficulties that may arise and live a meaningful and purpose-filled life.

The Bible’s message that “God shall supply all your need according to his riches” (Philippians 4:19) is echoed by Mary Baker Eddy in a statement in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need” (p. 494). Just how does divine Love accomplish this with such certainty? It is through an established divine law, Love’s law of supply.

Divine Love’s supply is law because Love, God, is inexhaustible and available to all, a fully sufficient supply for every need. God’s love can never be depleted; it is there for each one of Her children, and everyone is living under Love’s government. As God is infinite Love, and man is the spiritual image of Love, then man reflects the unlimited love of God, including having an unlimited supply of spiritual ideas from God. This is the nature of Love: to have and to give a constant supply of goodness.

In thinking about what supply is, and where it comes from, we might turn to a short passage in Mrs. Eddy’s article “Angels,” where she writes, “God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies” (Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, p. 307).

When there is a need, the right spiritual ideas are already there from God to meet the demand.

These spiritual ideas or angel thoughts from God—pure, perfect spiritual intuitions, providing the divine inspiration of absolute goodness—are our only true supply. They are being communicated from God, divine Love, to everyone, freely and continuously, at all times. God’s angel thoughts light our path, dissolve the darkness of uncertainty and fear, and reveal our God-given harmony.

Keeping our thought centered on God, and receptive to His ideas, we are attuned to divine Love, and so we are enabled to demonstrate divine Love’s supply for ourselves. It is on the basis of God’s omnipotent and omniscient love that every need is met.

Christ Jesus proved the divine law of supply—of infinite, inexhaustible good—to be always at hand when he fed a hungry multitude in the desert by multiplying five loaves and a couple of fishes, as recorded in each of the four Gospels. Often traditionally viewed as a miracle, this incident was actually evidence of God’s love for all and had as its foundation divine Love’s law of endless supply.

This is how Love’s law of supply comes into operation: It immediately (because of Love’s omnipresence) reveals to receptive human thought that there is no deficiency; and understanding this law furnishes a sufficiency in practical experience, meeting every demand and completely satisfying us. When there is a need, the right spiritual ideas are already there from God to meet the demand for understanding and demonstration.

I had an experience of divine Love supplying the right idea needed for healing when I was a young mother many years ago. The supply came in the form of inspiration from a hymn, which proved to be instrumental in helping me break free from disease.

A large, hard growth had developed in my armpit and limited the movement of my arm, which made my work and care for my young children difficult. The hymn furnished several ideas that lifted my thought, and its comforting message became my close companion for several weeks as I prayed. I especially held fast to the hymn’s third verse:

Healed is thy hardness, His love hath
     dissolved it,
Full is the promise, the blessing
     how kind;
So shall His tenderness teach thee
     compassion,
So all the merciful, mercy shall find.

 (P. M., Christian Science Hymnal, No. 278, adapt. © CSBD)

My gratitude was great, and the growth gently dissolved until it completely vanished. Now, it was not the specific words that healed, but the divine, potent love of God that the words conveyed to my thought. Divine Love dissolved the false suggestion of disease and healed by supplying to my consciousness the true view of my spiritual perfection, revealing my identity as the image and likeness of God, intact and complete.

Prayer based on the spiritual understanding of God’s law of supply transforms thought, allowing us to see supply made fully evident. Prayer brings the recognition that God’s law is acting on our behalf and meeting every need. Prayer quiets fear and helps draw thought close to God, enabling us to know that God’s love is ever pouring itself out upon everyone. With this kind of prayer, divine Love’s supply is made practical. It is experienced as harmony present in our lives through health and well-being, meaningful employment, and joyful companionship.

Divine Love supplies all our needs, stills our complaints, and ensures that we are fully satisfied.
