A quick healing in the night

From the November 2016 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Recently, I woke up with a start in the middle of the night. My throat was suddenly sore. I thought, “How did this happen?” But before I let this line of questioning go too far, I turned to prayer, which I knew from past experience to be an effective way to heal challenges big and small. I didn’t get up and open any books. I just turned to prayer right there in my thought.

When I listened to The Mother Church’s live online broadcast of a Wednesday testimony service not too long ago, I heard a testifier describe having turned to prayer in the middle of the night when feeling sick, and being healed quickly. I thought to myself, I can turn to God now, too, and I can experience the same good results in my thought and in my experience—right here in the dark!

I remember affirming that God is Truth, and that I reflect only what is truthful, good, and harmonious because we are the spiritual image and likeness of God. I also acknowledged that God was good, and because God was good, I could truly know only that which is good and pure. I mentally refuted the notion that I could be made sore or unhealthy.

While this prayer was taking place, I felt a palpable sense that God, divine Love, was right there with me, helping me, caring for me, and protecting me. As I have learned through reading the Bible and Mary Baker Eddy’s book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, man can’t be separated from God any more than God could be separated from good, nor could God be separated from Love, because God is good and is divine Love itself.

I also felt a clear sense that this soreness didn’t have any more power or reality than a dream. Like a dream, which presents only a suggestion of reality, I saw that the soreness was, at most, a belief, a suggestion of the material senses, that illness was part of me. And what was cool was that as soon as I rejected the fearful notion that sickness could be part of me, I suddenly felt the soreness end—fast! It didn’t return.

Later the next day, as I pondered this healing and felt so much gratitude, this Bible verse came to mind: “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

I’m learning more and more each day that God’s immediate healing power and love are always available—no matter where we are. And they come to us faster than the speed of light, because they are already present at every moment; we are never separate from God.

I’m very grateful for Christ Jesus’ wonderful healing example as a model to draw upon for quick and complete healing. I also am deeply grateful for Mary Baker Eddy’s persistence in making this healing truth widely available to all through Science and Health. Lastly, I’m very grateful for how The Mother Church makes the healing truths of Christian Science available to everyone—through The Christian Science Monitor, the Christian Science Sentinel and Journal, JSH-Online, church services in person and online, and all the wonderful tools we have to better understand the Bible.
