From the December 1955 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science reveals God as infinite, All. Therefore He is supreme over all. He is the one and only Being in the sense that He is the sole creator or source of all that really exists. In reality, nothing has entity or being separate from God. Paul said (Acts 17:28), "In him we live, and move, and have our being." With characteristic spiritual insight Mary Baker Eddy writes in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 285), "The time has come for a finite conception of the infinite and of a material body as the seat of Mind to give place to a diviner sense of intelligence and its manifestations,—to the better understanding that Science gives of the Supreme Being, or divine Principle, and idea."

This absolute truth of God's supremacy is made practical in our human experience when we understand the true nature of man, inseparable from God. Mrs. Eddy says (ibid., p. 554), "There is no such thing as mortality, nor are there properly any mortal beings, because being is immortal, like Deity,—or, rather, being and Deity are inseparable." This immortal Being, God, is not something theoretical, abstract, or remote. He is the living God, and man is His living expression.

Clearly, then, it is not enough for us merely to know God. We must demonstrate the fact that we are actually His expression by living the divine qualities. We then become a law unto ourselves, and this living law governs our whole experience harmoniously. Our Leader says (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 82): "Man is the offspring and idea of the Supreme Being, whose law is perfect and infinite. In obedience to this law, man is forever unfolding the endless beatitudes of Being; for he is the image and likeness of infinite Life, Truth, and Love."

Christian Science reveals Life as God. Since this Life is the Supreme Being, there is in reality no other life or being. And yet mortal belief is constantly urging us to accept the very opposite view. It asserts that life is spanned by years and is at the mercy of chance, change, or decline; that life is somehow injected into matter and is subjected to material influences and conditions; that life is a personal possession, localized within a material body. All the efforts of mankind to understand life on this basis have proved futile.

How unspeakable is our joy when we first begin to glimpse the true nature of man's being as God's reflection! Discerning God as Life—as the one living presence, power, intelligence, and activity—we see something of man's deathless being, unlimited, perfect, spiritual, and eternal. Life, God, can never be associated with deadness. When we learn how to think and act in accordance with these truths, we radiate that living divine presence everywhere. The false claims to life or existence are then destroyed as we progress in our understanding and demonstration of divine Life, the Supreme Being.

The Christian Scientist also learns that God, Life, is Truth. He understands that divine Truth is supreme over all. There is therefore no other truth. Anything unlike Truth is error, totally unreal and nonexistent. Truth's absolute supremacy precludes error's existence. Man's real being as Truth's reflection is pure and perfect. Error has never touched the real man or even entered the unlimited circumference of his being. The struggles of human experience represent only the throes of a vanishing dream. It is only in human consciousness that the belief in error claims entity or has to be destroyed through our awakening to a clearer understanding of Truth as the Supreme Being.

Perhaps an even clearer concept of the supremacy of God as Life and Truth can be gained when we understand Him as divine Love. Indeed, how dull and lifeless becomes our experience without love—pure affection. In Science we find that we cannot really live without expressing Love. Divine Love is the only real Being, supreme over all. Man, as God's expression, is the image and likeness of his Father-Mother Love. Hence Love is the Principle of man's being, the source of the law governing his experience, the impelling power which is eternally unfolding all true beauty, joy, gratitude, abundance, and good. Divine Love is not capricious or inconsistent. Love is "the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning" (James 1:17). The only seeming failure at any time is our own failure to live the qualities of divine Love. To live Love is to prove that one is Love's reflection. And living Love manifests the gentle yet all-powerful Christliness that heals.

Christ Jesus acknowledged no life or being apart from God. So pure was his understanding of God's supremacy that he was able to vanquish every claim to existence apart from Him. His great example showed forth the absolute supremacy of divine Life, Truth, and Love.

Through Christian Science the Christ reveals man's sonship with the living God. Mrs. Eddy understood God as the one Supreme Being. She did not present Christian Science merely as a theory, cold and inanimate. She saw divine Science as the Science of the living Christ revealing God, Spirit, as the very source and substance of man's being. Our Leader knew that the individual demonstration of absolute Truth was not only possible today but essential for the salvation of mankind.

Some years ago the writer experienced symptoms of an illness which he thought was appendicitis. His attempts to handle the error through his understanding of Christian Science appeared to be ineffectual, and the pain gradually increased. Then, one day in his office, although he had not mentioned his problem to anyone, two business colleagues individually mentioned to him appendicitis and its supposed effects. In spite of his efforts to deny all entity or reality to the problem, its supposed nature seemed to take on alarming proportions, and he became fearful.

He was shortly to take class instruction in Christian Science, and his anxiety as to whether he would be well enough to attend only increased his fear. He then sought the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. In loving response, the practitioner reminded him that God, Spirit, is the only Being, that because the divine Being has no material element, there can in reality be no such thing as appendicitis.

As the writer pondered at length the wondrous glory of God's supremacy, using the various synonyms for God, the burden of fear and pain dropped away. So uplifting was this glimpse of the Supreme Being that it was not until a short time later he suddenly realized a healing had occurred. Rejoicing in this proof of Love's all-presence and supreme power, he was able to take class instruction in Christian Science at the appointed time.

God, good, is the one infinite Supreme Being, and man is His perfect reflection. Let us consistently strive to broaden our understanding of these all-powerful truths and to express them in our human affairs. Then we shall see the warm, gentle glow of the Divine Being radiate and shed its light upon us, destroying the shadows of error and revealing the perfection and purity of all real being. Gratefully we can claim and live man's higher selfhood, his true being, and rejoice in these words of the Psalmist (Ps. 104:33): "I will sing unto the Lord as long as I live: I will sing praise to my God while I have my being."
