As I listened to the television news one summer evening, the announcer reported that the beaches of southern California had been inundated by an unusual number of jellyfish. He cautioned all swimmers and waders to use care when going into the water. As he talked about the situation, I was reminded of an experience I had when I was a little girl.
Our family had just moved to Texas and located not too far from the Gulf of Mexico. One weekend my parents, sister, and I drove to the beach for a picnic and fun in the Gulf waters. I wandered away from the group to play in the water. Looking down, I spotted a beautiful balloon, all pink and rosy, floating on top of the water. At least I thought it was a balloon! It was really a sea creature, called a Portuguese man-of-war. I reached down and grabbed it. Suddenly my hand and arm began to sting. I screamed, and my mother came at once.
Seeing the situation, she notified my dad and sister, and we got into the car and drove until we found a telephone. She then called a Christian Science teacher and practitioner to pray for me. We decided to return home. On the way, I began to settle down, and the pain subsided. The next day the hand was swollen quite a bit. But the practitioner continued to pray for me, and within a very short time I was completely healed.
Not one of God's creations can hurt or harm another.
Thinking of this experience and the report of numerous jellyfish at the beaches, I was grateful for the truth I'd been learning through the study of Christian Science—that good is the only reality. God is Spirit, infinite good, and in the allness of God, evil cannot exist. Therefore it must be unreal, nothingness. The first chapter of Genesis says that all of God's creation, including "every living creature," Gen. 1:21. is totally good. So nothing in God's universe can hurt or harm another of God's perfect creatures, since nothing is created or develops but good. All of God's ideas reflect the loving, harmonious nature of their Maker, God.
To the human senses, evil appears to have power and presence, to challenge the presence and power of universal good. But through prayer we can discern the true concept of everything God has created. When we pray for healing, we turn away from the false concept of creation as material, to the true sense of everything as created by divine Mind. Our every glimpse of the spiritual goodness of God's ideas replaces the false concept of them as dangerous material entities. We realize there is nothing to harm us. Through this spiritual transformation of thought, healing occurs and harmony is restored.
Eternal good has never been displaced or replaced by evil, pain, or any kind of inharmony. Good has always been the unchanging fact of existence. Science and Health states: "As God Himself is good and is Spirit, goodness and spirituality must be immortal. Their opposites, evil and matter, are mortal error, and error has no creator. If goodness and spirituality are real, evil and materiality are unreal and cannot be the outcome of an infinite God, good." Science and Health, p. 277.
The book also says reassuringly, "The relations of God and man, divine Principle and idea, are indestructible in Science; and Science knows no lapse from nor return to harmony, but holds the divine order or spiritual law, in which God and all that He creates are perfect and eternal, to have remained unchanged in its eternal history." Ibid., pp. 470–471.
God's goodness is supreme. He is always-present Spirit.
When my three children were young, our home was located in a hilly part of southwestern Texas, where the terrain was rocky. One day, as my two little girls were dressing to go outside to play, I heard a lot of screaming and ran to them. The younger girl had reached into a laundry bag to retrieve a pair of socks, and a scorpion had stung her on her hand. I did my best to quiet her, and I immediately called a practitioner for Christian Science treatment. The only thing he said to me was a verse from the first chapter of Genesis: "And God saw every thing that he had made, and behold, it was very good." Gen. 1:31. My daughter stopped crying at once. In a short time, the redness and swelling on her hand subsided, and she went outside to play. That was the end of that! I saw once again that good is the only reality and that true, spiritual existence includes no poison, pain, or swelling.
So when we hear news of any kind of evil event, we can deny the presence of anything unlike good. We can become conscious of the truth that God's infinite goodness stands supreme, for He is All, omnipresent Spirit. Never for a moment has anything bad been really real. Each of us has the God-bestowed ability to understand these spiritual truths, and thus be free of any form of bondage.
