The gentle touch of the healing Christ

From the October 2017 issue of The Christian Science Journal

While visiting with friends in their home, I fell ill with a severe headache. Earlier they had asked me to stay for dinner. Now they kindly invited me to lie down in their guest bedroom, so I did.

As I lay there in pain, I quickly realized that unless I started praying, listening to God for healing inspiration, I would miss out on a happy time. So I opened my thought to God. A specific healing Christ Jesus performed came to mind. In Matthew, we read that Jesus arrived at Peter’s house and saw that Peter’s mother-in-law was in bed, ill with a fever. He went to her at once, and gently touched and healed her. Fully restored immediately, she served them a meal! (See Matthew 8:14, 15.)

I earnestly wanted to feel the gentle touch of the healing Christ. Through the study of Christian Science, which is a Bible-based religion, I knew that although Jesus ascended, the Christ, the true idea or reflection of God, is always present. Jesus declared, “Before Abraham was, I am” (John 8:58). Before the prophet Abraham, the eternal Christ existed.

This statement in the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, speaks of the Christ as ever present: “Christ, as the true spiritual idea, is the ideal of God now and forever, here and everywhere” (p. 361). Therefore the incorporeal Christ is always present and available to everyone, everywhere. So we can turn our thought to the Christ when we are at school or work or home, traveling, shopping, or watching a sports game, or protecting and defending our community, state, or nation in law enforcement or in the armed services.

Does the Christ speak to us? Yes. Science and Health assures us with these two statements: “Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness” (p. 332). “Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea,—the reflection of God,—has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth” (p. 333).

Based on this, the good ideas from God that come to us—and everyone around us—are uttered in thought by the Christ. And there is no delay, no interruption, no static. Christ’s messages are always health-giving and wholesome, and mantled with peace, joy, confidence, and love. These holy messages are irresistible, because they are always good.

Christ’s messages are always health-giving and wholesome, and mantled with peace, joy, confidence, and love.

But how can we best prepare our thought to be aware of and receptive to what the Christ is telling us? One element of receptivity to Christ, Truth, is a sincere desire to understand God, divine Spirit. Another element is a humble yearning to give up a false, material view of existence for the true, spiritual sense of being. And a repentant heart is naturally open to Christ, Truth, and its saving and healing messages.

This brings us to some basic questions. Is man material, sickly, imperfect, or is he entirely spiritual, whole and hale, perfect? Does matter or divine Spirit govern man? Christ Jesus’ healing works exposed the foundationless nature of matter, overturning its so-called laws and presumption of reality, substance, power, and intelligence. His healings pointed to the supremacy and allness of Spirit, and Spirit’s unbreakable and universal laws of harmony and health. His healing works proved the real man to be spiritual and to be perpetually subject to the divine law of harmony, and never at the mercy of material laws or conditions or circumstances.

The material view of existence is seen to be baseless as the genuinely scientific, spiritual sense of being is demonstrated. Unimpressed by physical sense testimony, Jesus even healed ten lepers instantly. He must have known that nothing—such as the erroneous belief of leprosy—multiplied by ten, is still nothing.

Jesus unfolded the present flawless spiritual reality of existence through healing, teaching, and preaching. A central component of his theology he boiled down to six storm-stilling and disease-dissolving words: “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30)—words that affirmed the fact that Jesus, as God’s Son, was inseparable from God. This radical theology of man’s oneness with God, Spirit, was what he proved. The blind saw, the deaf heard, lepers were cleansed. The man with the withered hand was whole again, and the lame walked without limping. Sinners were neither stoned nor shunned; they were redeemed and transformed. And in this way, Jesus proved the power of the Christ, which he represented, to reveal our spiritual identity as sons and daughters of God, inseparable from Him, and therefore able to do the works that Jesus said his followers would be able to do.

The physical healings wrought by Jesus occurred without a lengthy period of recuperation. That could only be possible if what appeared to be a physical condition was merely erroneous belief. Jesus taught and demonstrated that man is the perfect likeness of God, Spirit, so he is spiritual, not material, forever expressing God in true vision and hearing and speech, in perfect movement and strength, free from all claims of defects, sickness, accidents, and old age. Our Way-shower illustrated how understanding the spiritual fact of man’s present faultless being as God’s pure likeness overthrows the false claims of material beliefs, dissolves them, and brings healing.

He wanted his followers in every age to be healers, to overcome vice, illness, discords of every kind, through spiritual means alone, as he did. When we do so, we are accepting the allness of divine Spirit, God, good, and the nothingness of matter and its false appearances. We are advancing beyond the belief in matter and realizing more of Spirit’s supremacy as we demonstrate Christ, Truth.

That afternoon, a clear realization dawned on me that I was God’s loved child, His perfectly healthy, spiritual idea, not an ailing mortal. That divine message was the gentle touch of the healing Christ, assuring me of my forever oneness with my Father-Mother God. I felt cherished and well. The headache had vanished.

Full of gratitude, I rose, happily rejoined my friends, and helped set the table for dinner. My friends rejoiced with me over this quick healing.

Christian Science reveals the ever-presence and power of the healing Christ, Truth. Its healing message is for everyone. It speaks to us with love and clarity, tenderness and precision. All have the opportunity to understand and experience the truth of man’s present health and harmony, and be free. This divine message is the gentle touch of the healing Christ, Truth, and it speaks to you and me, today and always.
