God’s guidance saves and heals

From the February 2018 issue of The Christian Science Journal

God has only one purpose for each one of us: to reflect Him through our individual expression. We are God’s ideas, and we dwell eternally in the one infinite Mind, safe from anything that might divert us from the sacred path that He shows us lovingly and wisely. And nothing is outside God’s reach and power.

A few years ago, before I found Christian Science, and when I was in my first year of university, I woke up one morning with severe pain in my lungs. It was difficult to breathe. In my heart I knew that God always loves us and that His care and protection exempt us from every potential danger.

I began to pray with the Lord’s Prayer. I would go into my room and study and think about the words in this prayer that Christ Jesus gave us (see Matthew 6:9–13).

As the days went by I could feel my thought being lifted, leaving behind fear and thoughts of sickness and pain. Now I see I was giving way to a deeper understanding of the kingdom of God, forever present. I also see that I had begun to acknowledge the totality of God’s presence in my life. He was not a distant being, alien to me or to my experience. Much to the contrary, I could feel His loving presence filling all space. I felt the warmth of divine Love.

I was also able to understand how God’s forgiveness of us, as well as our forgiveness of those who have offended us, frees us from chains of pain and discord. I don’t remember the timing exactly, but at some point I knew that I was permanently healed.

Neither my family nor my friends ever knew anything about this situation. During all this time, I was able to continue with my usual activities in an absolutely normal way.

A short time later, my family and I had to go through the process of becoming permanent residents of Brazil, where we were living at the time. There were mandatory medical examinations, and an X-ray of my chest indicated the presence of scarring on the lungs. When the doctor asked my father about this, and learned that he knew nothing about it, the doctor simply said, “Whatever happened, it’s already healed.”

This healing served as a definitive landmark in my life. No matter what happened, from this point on, I would always turn to God for a solution. I learned from this experience that because God is our Father-Mother, our Maker, no one is ever left out of the divine Love that embraces us all.

Many years passed, and I had a period of searching and prayer before I came to hear about Christian Science.

One afternoon, as I walked down the street to my job, I again turned to the Father for help. In the wisest and most loving way, and to my surprise, I was guided in the direction of a Church of Christ, Scientist—a branch church of the Christian Science denomination. A quote from the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, written on a church sign caught my attention: “To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings” (p. vii).

I immediately knew that Love was again guiding and protecting me. I went into the church with doubts and many questions, and when I left, I had a copy of Science and Health.

The day after I visited that church, I went back and attended the Thanksgiving service for the first time. I remember to this day the emotion that gripped me when I heard the congregation’s testimonies of gratitude. Silently I joined the gratitude and the acknowledgment of God as the only power able to save us from all discord.

A short time after I was just beginning to study Christian Science, one of my dogs, Sami, began to manifest symptoms of illness. A veterinarian diagnosed a stroke and delivered a prognosis that was not very hopeful. I turned to God and decided to rely on the teachings of Christian Science.

I prayed, affirming that Sami, as a spiritual idea of the one infinite Mind, was never subject to material conditions, nor was she at the mercy of time, age, or any material circumstances. I stood firm in the certainty that her health did not depend on material laws, since there is only one law, the law of God that rules and governs all creation. Although the vet had prescribed large quantities of medication, I did not administer it.

After one week of prayer, Sami recovered her normal functions and went back to playing and running. I was beginning to prove in my own experience that, as Mary Baker Eddy said, “The divine Principle and rules of this Christianity being demonstrable, they are undeniable; and they must be found final, absolute, and eternal” (Message to The Mother Church for 1900, p. 4).

At that time I was also going through a complex work and financial situation. I had just lost a family business. Although I soon began new and intensive work as a private art teacher, my income was still insufficient to cover all my expenses.

I asked for help from a Christian Science practitioner. During the visits we had in her office, she guided me toward the study and understanding of my true identity as a daughter and reflection of God. She explained to me that God’s creation is spiritually perfect and complete. Everything we might need is provided by our Father-Mother Love. The acknowledgment of God’s presence as the absolute Principle that governs our life and the whole universe allows us to see the good that we need unfold in our human experience. In praying with these ideas, I was able to start working in real estate, and soon the financial difficulties were left in the past.

After I began to study Christian Science, I was able to recognize the validity and truth of all that Mrs. Eddy left us through her invaluable teachings. In Rudimental Divine Science our Leader defines Christian Science as “the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony” (p. 1). The acknowledgment of this truth leads us inexorably to the only possible result: health, harmony, peace, and well-being in our experience and, ultimately, throughout the entire universe.

Throughout my years of studying the teachings of Christian Science, both my family and I have received many very significant blessings. My mother was healed of ocular herpes while attending a Sunday service; I was healed of severe back pain before a trip, a dislocated finger, and a bee sting within a few minutes, just to name a few of my many healings. In each one of them, God’s guidance and government were the Rock upon which I was able to firmly stand. As I look back, I observe how God has always guided my steps with gentleness, wisdom, and infinite love. That is how I was able to have Primary class instruction, and finally, one day in prayer, to recognize the divine voice once again, this time guiding me into the public practice as a Christian Science practitioner.

It’s wonderful to know that we can bear witness to the kingdom of heaven as an eternally permanent and active truth, and understand above all that we can help our neighbor and bring peace and healing to those in need by obeying Jesus’ biblical commandment to, “Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give” (Matthew 10:8).
