When I committed to the full-time practice of Christian Science

From the October 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

One day at work in one of the retail stores I owned in New York City, I felt uneasy, as if I might pass out. Because of the aggressiveness of the symptoms, I walked outside and prayed to God, seeking strength in the conviction of His omnipotence. Though I was wavering, I trusted in God and His law of eternal good. The Bible declares there is a higher, more powerful law of Spirit that exceeds and disproves a lesser law—a supposed law that asserts that sin and death are inevitable and are more powerful than God, eternal Life. Romans 8:2 states: “For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.”

Christ Jesus, the Son of God, proved that statement to be true through his healing ministry that saved sinners, healed the sick, and raised the dead. This powerful proof was the result of Jesus living a sinless life, and of his deep devotion and obedience to God and His law of good, which governs the universe harmoniously, including man.

From a limited perspective, man appears to be a concoction of material elements, sustained by a universally accepted theory of physical life that has assigned a mentality to it. Brain thinks, nerves feel, organs function, muscles move—all, supposedly, of their own volition. Christian Science defines this theory as a belief that would make man the captive of a mortal body, subject to physical law—the belief being that as the brain, nerves, organs, and muscles go, so goes man.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer of Christian Science, followed Jesus’ words and works to discover the real state of being. In her primary work, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she writes, “Entirely separate from the belief and dream of material living, is the Life divine, revealing spiritual understanding and the consciousness of man’s dominion over the whole earth” (p. 14).

As I glimpsed this understanding in prayer, I requested an employee to inform my wife that I needed to go home. When she picked me up, I lay down in the back seat and voiced verses from the Bible and passages from Science and Health. The spiritual ideas in them sustained and strengthened me. When we arrived home, I immediately called a Christian Science practitioner, one who heals through prayer, and asked her to tell me all about Life. She quickly affirmed that God was my Life, and because of that spiritual fact, my life was eternal. Nothing could stand in the way of my divine purpose. Regardless of what the material sensations were arguing, there could be no interruptions to this constant good. I remained firm in this understanding.

After a few minutes, I began to feel more normal, but I knew something profound had happened. Feeling mentally fragile, I stayed home for several days after that incident, submerging myself in prayer that consisted of communing with and praising God, the only Mind—the power I called upon earlier at my store to save me from the grip of fearful uncertainty and a physical threat.

The writings of Mary Baker Eddy have brought me to a clearer understanding of infinite Life.

I was coming to realize it was time for me to give serious consideration to leaving the business I had been in for the last 13 years. For a long time, I had wanted to enter into the public practice of Christian Science, but there had always seemed to be other pressing duties that required my attention and delayed my taking steps toward my spiritual goal. This experience was teaching me that when God calls one to labor for mankind’s freedom from sin, disease, and death—this is no small demand.

Days later, after returning to the store, I was driving home, and again I felt strangely uneasy. It occurred to me that I was being struck with some illness and about to lose consciousness. While there was no physical discomfort, I felt a strong temptation to panic and knew that I needed to pull over to the side of the highway.

As I sat there, with three lanes of traffic speeding by, I was overcome with feelings of fear that I was about to die. I knew I couldn’t just sit there and succumb to these strong suggestions. So, I got out of my car and reached out to God. I shouted, “God is my Life! Evil, you have no power over me! I am a son of God! I refuse to be afraid of or intimidated by your claims! You are a lie and a liar! ‘Get thee behind me’ (Luke 4:8)! God is here with me! I express God. Father, give me the strength to defeat this lie. Evil, you will not win!”

As I continued to argue for my spiritual innocence and well-being, I walked around the car pounding my fist into my other hand. I have no idea what the people driving by thought when they saw me walking around my car rebuking these aggressive mental suggestions, and I didn’t care. I was fighting for my life and God was saving it.

In that moment, thoughts from Science and Health came to mind: “Mind is the master of the corporeal senses, and can conquer sickness, sin, and death. Exercise this God-given authority. Take possession of your body, and govern its feeling and action. Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good. God has made man capable of this, and nothing can vitiate the ability and power divinely bestowed on man” (p. 393).

When the fear and discomfort began to diminish, I climbed back into my car and drove home, sustaining myself by singing hymns out loud all the way.

Arriving home, I immediately called the practitioner and informed her of my experience and of my wakened commitment to enter the full-time practice of Christian Science.

I did not return to my stores, but sold them as opportunity occurred. This I did and never looked back. It’s hard to grasp, because that experience seems like yesterday, but I’ve been in the public practice of Christian Science for over 35 years.

Through her writings and recorded proofs of Truth, Mary Baker Eddy has brought me to a clearer understanding of infinite Life. This has enabled me to become a spiritual healer and to practice the teachings of Jesus Christ. Deep in my heart of hearts I know it has been God’s love that has wakened, chastened, and guided me into living and proving the healing Christ—Christian Science.

As Science and Health states so beautifully: “Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus’ teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit,—the law of divine Love” (p. 19). Who wouldn’t want to share this practice and experience of God, divine Love?
