Head wound quickly healed

From the October 2021 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Christian Science explains that in order to experience the harmony and happiness of spiritual reality, we must give credence to spiritual sense and stop letting the material senses determine what we think. In the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy says, “Sin, disease, whatever seems real to material sense, is unreal in divine Science” (p. 353).

There was a time when one of my jobs involved hanging ductwork. One day I was working alone on a remodel job where I had to hang a large, cube-shaped fan over the top of an existing pipe. As I was pushing the duct jack to move the fan into place, one of its wheels stuck and the duct jack tipped over. Either the fan, the duct jack, or both landed on my forehead. I found myself lying on the floor, bleeding profusely, with the fan and duct jack lying next to me.

I called my wife, a Christian Science practitioner. I asked her to pray for me and to come pick me up at the job site. She agreed and said that there were no accidents in God’s kingdom, and that I assuredly lived in God’s kingdom.

I was tempted to adopt fear and self-pity in reaction to the hypnotic suggestion that the accident and injury were my reality. But I stopped this direction of thought immediately.

Instead of indulging the temptation, I began to reason about what is real and what is delusive. I recalled one of my favorite citations from the Bible: “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling” (Psalms 91:9, 10). I found this passage to be both comforting and relevant. With that, I felt well enough to clean myself up and prepare for my trip home.

I met my wife, who drove me home and then thoroughly washed and bandaged the wound. We both continued to pray. I reasoned that pain had no cause, and using concordance software I found this quote from Science and Health: “There is but one primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only cause. Sin, sickness, disease, and death belong not to the Science of being. They are the errors, which presuppose the absence of Truth, Life, or Love” (p. 207).

I continued to reason as follows: There can be no real or lasting effect from a suppositional accident depicted by material sense. All real happenings must happen in God’s kingdom, since God is infinite and there is nothing outside of infinity. No real happenings can ever be accidental, since God is the only cause. No real happenings are ever injurious, since God, the only cause, is divine Love. All is already well and in God’s complete and loving control no matter what material sense seems to depict. Only spiritual sense reveals man’s condition and state of well-being. Spiritual sense reveals that all is completely well, in reality.

I understood that this complete wellness was already true for me, and I felt mentally comfortable.

My wife was still praying as I went to bed for the night. The next morning the pain and sense of limitation had disappeared. I returned to the job site and put in a productive day of work without any problem.

After a few days the bandage and tape were drooping, so I removed them. There was no evidence that an injury had occurred. What a wonderful gift it is that practitioners give to those who call for help.

If I had given in to the temptation to believe that an accident had injured me, it is likely that it would have been a different kind of experience than the one that followed the decision to respond spiritually to this temptation. Material sense often depicts us as vulnerable, sick, lacking, or injured. This is erroneous, because we are entirely spiritual. The divine Mind, God, reveals that we are invulnerable, unalterably perfect, ever harmonious and healthy. Which provider of information are we giving credence to? Mrs. Eddy writes, “Truth will at length compel us all to exchange the pleasures and pains of sense for the joys of Soul” (Science and Health, p. 390).
