I live in Tanzania, in East Africa. On December 21, 2013, I spent the day just fine, doing my duties at home, as usual.
In the evening I went to a neighbor’s place for a graduation ceremony, where I drank some water and then some juice. While I was drinking the juice, I received a call on my handset [cellphone], and I left the room to talk because it was very noisy. Then I came back to finish the juice.
When I reached home a short time later, I started to feel tired. I told my wife that I could not eat because I had a stomachache. I went into the bathroom and poured some water on my head in order to get some refreshment. My whole body started to sweat.
Then I went into the living room, where my wife found me shaking and very ill. She feared for me and asked me to go to hospital for treatment. I refused, politely, and asked her to give me my Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy so I could read it. I have had many healings by studying this book. But my wife did not think I was well enough to do anything and said again that I should go to hospital.
My condition became serious, and at night my wife called my best friend for advice. He told her to have someone take me by motorcycle to the hospital, and she called my neighbor friend. In a few minutes he was at our home with his motorcycle.
At the hospital, I met the doctor and he did some tests. He said that I had drunk poison, and I had to start taking medication right away.
After hearing the doctor’s words, I remembered Jesus’ words, “They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them” (Mark 16:18). I believed “they” meant anyone, and I had confidence that God would help me. And so I did not take the medication.
When I prayed, I thought, God is Spirit, and I am God’s image and likeness; therefore, what can harm me? Poison has no power because God is All and He is the only power. Poison cannot harm Spirit or Spirit’s reflection. Also, I knew that life is in infinite Spirit, not in matter.
I remembered “the scientific statement of being” in Science and Health. It says: “There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. Spirit is immortal Truth; matter is mortal error. Spirit is the real and eternal; matter is the unreal and temporal. Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual” (p. 468).
As I thought about this statement, I won against the fear of poison. I asked the doctor to let me go home and continue with my prayers because I believe “the scientific statement of being.” It was not easy for him to agree to my request, but at last he did, and my neighbor took me home.
Everyone who knows me came to see me at home and was surprised to hear what had happened at the party. There were many people at the graduation ceremony and we all drank the same juice, but I alone was affected. I don’t know why.
I kept praying and knowing that God is All-in-all, and by the morning I was much better. I was cool and no longer sweating or feeling sick, and in three or four days I was as strong as I normally am.
I am happy that when I called on God in my difficult circumstance, He answered me and healed me. I thank God for Christian Science, which has given me the ability to understand scientifically that God is divine good and the only power.
I saw Freddy at the party. In the night his wife called me asking me to take him to hospital, and when I asked what was wrong, she told me, in short, that he had eaten poison. I took him on my motorcycle to hospital. Everyone did not understood when he refused to take medication. He said that medication could not help him; only by prayer he was going to be fine.
When he left hospital, I took him back to his house, where he had a book [Science and Health], and he was in prayer.
I went to see Freddy after a week. He was fine. Some of the [people in the] village asked him to [take a medical] test again [for the poison], and the results showed that he was fine.
We do not know why someone would want to poison Freddy, but in our [refugee] camp, when people see someone who has different opinions or views, they often want to harm you.
I wish to know his secret of healing.
