Prayer dissolves intense pain

From the April 2018 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I am deeply grateful to God for a physical healing that came very quickly and decisively through prayer in Christian Science.

On a Sunday morning last year, I awoke with pain and stiffness in my neck. Since I wanted to be in church, I showered and got dressed. However, when it came time to leave, I couldn’t turn my head without sharp pain, so I asked my wife to drive.

As we sat together in church, I drank in the healing truths in the Christian Science Lesson-Sermon, and I especially appreciated the music that morning. Yet by the time church was over things had grown worse. When we arrived home, I found I couldn’t eat lunch normally or sit upright. A very insistent thought came that I had a pinched nerve in my neck.

That afternoon, as I turned in prayer to God, I opened Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures to page 480, where Mary Baker Eddy writes: “Nerves are an element of the belief that there is sensation in matter, whereas matter is devoid of sensation. Consciousness, as well as action, is governed by Mind,—is in God, the origin and governor of all that Science reveals.”

It stood out to me that she does not say nerves are an element of matter, but that they are an element of the mistaken belief that there is sensation in matter. Recalling the Bible’s description of God as Love (see I John 4:16), I knew that nothing besides infinite Love could ever be real, including the belief of pain—no matter how extreme.

Another point that moved me forward was part of the definition of nerve in my dictionary: “steadiness, courage, and sense of purpose when facing a demanding situation.” I saw that since these are God-given spiritual assets—and that they’re available to each one of us in every situation—they could never be blocked, damaged, or pinched.

By that evening I was feeling the comforting presence of divine Love much more tangibly. It was restoring my understanding that health and freedom are permanent, unobstructed, and unshakable. As the image and likeness of God, I knew I reflected strength, resolve, and dominion. These had never been lost, and never could be.

The next day, the intense pain had lessened significantly. By Tuesday it was completely gone, and it has not returned.

I’m so grateful to have witnessed the powerful, healing grace of God—which is shown to us, through His Christ, as omnipotent and eternal. It’s the law we live by each day.
