The Science of God’s allness heals

From the April 2019 issue of The Christian Science Journal

There have been so many clear healings in my experience as a Christian Scientist. This wonderful, constantly renewing way of comprehending and utilizing the power and presence of God is aptly called Christian Science, because its study and practice bring real, reliable healing.

In one case, I remember visiting my son and daughter-in-law for dinner, when I heard a loud shout and bang coming from the kitchen. My son’s wife had accidentally grabbed the handle of a large steel skillet with her bare hand, forgetting it was still hot from the oven. As I heard the exclamation and the pan dropping to the floor, I rushed over to help. She was running her hand under cold water, before wrapping it with a towel loaded with ice. The wrapped hand indicated an aggressive claim of a burn, and she expressed considerable pain. She gratefully accepted my offer to pray for her.

My prayer to help her began with getting quiet to better feel God’s presence, comfort, and love. In this silence, I acknowledged that this healing was going to need God’s present authority—nothing less—and I knew this would involve mentally challenging the world’s views about chance, accident, injury, and other physical laws that would make us think “I am hurt!” I prayed to let divine Love allay all fear and to see clearly that the real woman in this case was actually forever a perfectly expressed, reflected idea of God—the incorporeal image and likeness of our Father-Mother God.

Understanding that God’s laws are wholly spiritual and are spiritually perceived by all of His creation calms fear and allows us to put our trust in Him. From this starting point we can begin to recognize that physical laws are not laws at all because they do not express God’s spiritual, present, incorporeal perfection. In studying the Bible and its companion book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, we learn that God is ever present, eternally active, and flawless—perfectly expressed in all of creation all of the time.

It was after earnestly praying from this basis with my whole heart that these words came quietly to my thought: “Hello, My beloved. I am here right now, embracing My universe in My consciousness, with My ideas, My expressions, My reflections, My provisions. All these expressions are perfect, spiritual, and good. This is a fact. Trust Me, and watch!”

Watch? Yes, but not for a change in the physical condition of the hand. This angel thought was asking me to watch for spiritual inspiration—be a witness to God’s present perfection and infinite power! When we watch to know God’s ever-presence, harmony, and perfect “now-ness,” we begin to see that material evidences of accident or injury are claims against the only reality there really is.

From these earnest prayers, I gained a very strong sense of the present spiritual reality that conquered fear and concern. As a result, the injury vanished overnight—completely. There was no burn, no blemish, no hint of the accident. My daughter-in-law showed me this as she thrust out her hand and said, “You have to come teach me how this happened!” We were both humbled and so grateful for the healing. It was so wonderful to witness the power of God—the power of the Christ, God’s perfect idea—manifesting itself just as Jesus taught that it would.

God is right now expressing perfection, with all the power He has always had: all power.

So how did this happen? Let’s take a look at what Mary Baker Eddy says about this in Science and Health: “When an accident happens, you think or exclaim, ‘I am hurt!’ Your thought is more powerful than your words, more powerful than the accident itself, to make the injury real.

“Now reverse the process. Declare that you are not hurt and understand the reason why, and you will find the ensuing good effects to be in exact proportion to your disbelief in physics, and your fidelity to divine metaphysics, confidence in God as All, which the Scriptures declare Him to be” (p. 397).

Understanding “the reason why” means starting from the basis that God, Spirit, exists and is all good, which is how so many people found healing in the Bible. Then, now, and always, God’s perfect goodness is real and never absent. The suggestion that there can be a lapse in perfect goodness is a claim that there can somehow be a gap in all. Well, we can reason that there is no gap in all; God is All and includes all, because God is infinite Spirit, which has no limitations. So the claim or belief that there is such a gap in God, or good, is the opposite or absence of Truth. And we can bundle all of the claims of a gap or lapse in good in the same disposal—in the nothingness that they are.

Here’s the thing: That’s not a historic nugget that was only true way back when the universe was “born,” or for a very limited period of time while Jesus walked among mankind. It is fact—now, then, and forever. God’s power isn’t worn out, waning, or disengaged. God is right now expressing perfection, with all the power He has always had: all power.

So with this ever-present good, there is, in reality, no opportunity for an opposite claim, a false claim, to exist. This fact, this Science of the Christ, makes it impossible for us, as God’s spiritual reflection, to deviate from perfect goodness. In fact, the truth of our spiritual identity is what actually defines all of us. It can be seen today wherever healing happens as the result of human consciousness yielding to the light of divine Truth and Love.

Science and Health opens our understanding of this power of Truth to heal, in so many ways. Here’s one example: “Christian Science brings to the body the sunlight of Truth, which invigorates and purifies. Christian Science acts as an alterative, neutralizing error with Truth. It changes the secretions, expels humors, dissolves tumors, relaxes rigid muscles, restores carious bones to soundness. The effect of this Science is to stir the human mind to a change of base, on which it may yield to the harmony of the divine Mind” (p. 162).

This “change of base” is the change of thought Christ Jesus demanded of those who would be healers for themselves and others. And Mary Baker Eddy, with a life given over to Christ, gave “a little book” (Revelation 10:2) to share with all humanity, so we can experience, here and now, the scientific, invariable, perfectly infallible truth that God is here all the time to transform our thought and experience. When accident, illness, injury, chance, sin, or anything else would pull us away from this most wonderful fact, we can watch our thinking! And with the prophet, “Stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord” (Exodus 14:13).

Healing is God’s way of working in us to demonstrate the timeless, undiminished presence of His perfection, power, and activity. It is the scientific, reliable means by which God proves to us—whenever we are challenged by anything inharmonious—that He is All.
