As much of the thought of mankind, over the centuries, has focused on matter, matter has assumed greater importance and a wider variety of forms. And as matter has been honored and regarded as the source of good, so has matter's potential to harm increased, even to the point of threatening the destruction of nations.

It is when we feel we need matter and it is lacking, or when we have trusted it and it has failed us, that we turn from the material to the spiritual. And, in general, when mankind have denied or rejected or relinquished faith in matter, then they have had their clearest proofs of Spirit's abundance.

Throughout the Bible we find examples of individuals and nations discovering the presence and the power of God, Spirit, as able to supply or protect or restore. When the spiritually-minded affirmed the presence of God and praised Him for His goodness, they had evidence of spiritual power. Perhaps prayer resulted in men obtaining water, oil, food, or in meeting a need in a totally unexpected way. Or perhaps the answered prayer came in the form of a hearing ear, or the hand made whole, or life where there had appeared to be death. We may then ask, Didn't Spirit meet the human need with a supply of matter or by changing matter or taking it away?

Spirit, God, doesn't know matter. But when a spiritual truth is accepted into consciousness, the spiritual energies of Truth act as a law to our experience, nullifying what would endanger or limit mankind. The energy of Truth operates to enlighten; it could be compared to the effect of light on darkness. The energies of Truth are spiritual, and therefore their presence and activity dispel material concepts. Spiritual ideas destroy material beliefs, which are mistakenly termed laws.

We find, as the light causes the darkness to disappear, the spiritual facts that declare and define God cause the material to appear as it is—unreal. Spiritual facts, understood, cause us to cease being impressed by matter, to forgo reliance on it and either a greed for it or a fear of it. Then we under stand that the energy of divine Truth liberates us from materialism—from matter impositions and limitations. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, declares, "The three great verities of Spirit, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—Spirit possessing all power, filling all space, constituting all Science,—contradict forever the belief that matter can be actual."Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, pp. 109-110

Instead of bemoaning the energy shortage and what it is doing to our life-style, let us look to Spirit for a higher life-style. Mrs. Eddy writes, "Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy."  ibid., p. 249

If we believe that matter governs our existence, then we face the stress, loss of joy, discommoding, and discomfort due to shortages of matter. However, if we know God's law of progress is in operation on our behalf, with its divine purpose to bless, we will rejoice that the energies of Truth are compelling us to turn from matter to Spirit, compelling us to discover spiritual resources we may never have claimed, compelling us to waken to our potential as God-purposed, God-supplied individuals.

When all material streams are dried,
Thy fullness is the same.Christian Science Hymnal,No.224

Ezekiel prophesied of the power of Spirit to bring about the abasement of what had been falsely, erroneously elevated to high estate. He said, "Thus saith the Lord God ; Remove the diadem, and take off the crown .... I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is; and I will give it him."Ezek. 21:26, 27

We need not view the overturning of the material with dismay. We can understand and rejoice in the reasons for the apparent disturbances in the so-called material realm. The upheaval comes about because many are turning from the material to the spiritual, because many are seeking better forms of government—more equality and justice for every man, woman, and child, regardless of color or race or religion—because the material is meeting with some disbelief, denial, and rejection as mankind seek sincerely to know God and claim His good, because Spirit is exerting itself and the irresistible force and attraction of its energies.

Mortal mind—to which, alone, matter is real—resists nullification. Mrs. Eddy explains, "The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence, want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their nothingness appears." Science and Health, p. 96

We lose a sense of being dependent on matter conditions proportionately as we perceive present spiritual good as a manifestation of God, good, and therefore unlimited. The nothingness of matter begins to appear when we have gained an appreciation of the value of every God-supplied spiritual quality and see these qualities as coming from a source that never is dried up, closed down, or diminished. Divine Love's immediate supply of divine resources to meet every human need and point the way to intelligent answers to our problems of energy is here now, ready for our recognition and application.

Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God.
Romans 8:38,39
