All science requires universally repeatable proof. When a new scientific discovery is made, the application and study of it by a scientific community naturally results in the building up of a body of evidence. As Albert Einstein put it, science involves “those who are thoroughly imbued with the aspiration toward truth and understanding” (Ideas and Opinions, p. 46). Furthermore, science relies on intelligent intuition and persistent faith, often accompanied by patient effort, which result in progressive scientific demonstration.
Is there a science that proves the existence of God? Well-known atheist and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins wrote, “God’s existence or non-existence is a scientific fact about the universe, discoverable in principle if not in practice” (The God Delusion, p. 73). Mary Baker Eddy did discover the Science by which we prove God’s existence, a system of divine metaphysics that she called Christian Science because it was the basis of Christ Jesus’ teachings, and she presented it to the world in her book Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures in 1875.
Christian Science reinstated the healing method Christ Jesus fully demonstrated and taught his disciples. This was a scientific discovery, and not an invention of man; and it was made universally available for all to learn and practice. Eddy not only founded a new religion on this Christian Science, but, at divine direction, she also established a scientific community to prove this eternal Science to the world.
At the deepest level, a scientific community requires a paradigm as to the nature of reality. Eddy wrote: “Divine metaphysics, as revealed to spiritual understanding, shows clearly that all is Mind, and that Mind is God, omnipotence, omnipresence, omniscience,—that is, all power, all presence, all Science. Hence all is in reality the manifestation of Mind” (Science and Health, p. 275). She had discovered this divinely revealed definition of eternal reality through “divine revelation, reason, and demonstration” (Science and Health, p. 109). Her discovery, that God, otherwise known as Mind or Spirit, is all, and that we reflect this Mind, was a radical paradigm shift away from the commonly held view that matter is the substance of reality. She wrote, “Christian Science explains all cause and effect as mental, not physical” (Science and Health, p. 114).
This discovery, firmly grounded in Jesus’ scientific statement, “The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing” (John 6:63, New International Version), was fundamentally opposed to the assumption that matter is the foundation for all life and intelligence. Therefore, it had to provide an explanation as to the nature of matter. Eddy found “that the opposite of Truth,—called error, sin, sickness, disease, death,—is the false testimony of false material sense, of mind in matter; that this false sense evolves, in belief, a subjective state of mortal mind which this same so-called mind names matter, thereby shutting out the true sense of Spirit” (Science and Health, p. 108). This revelation makes plain that matter is a formation of mortal consciousness—referred to in the Bible as the “carnal mind,” which includes all destructive or evil thinking—and not a creation of Spirit, or the divine Mind, which includes all pure and creative spiritual goodness. It far preceded the advances of quantum physicists in the early 20th century that stated similar findings. For instance, decades later Max Planck said, “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness” (The Observer, January 25, 1931).
Is there a science that proves the existence of God?
Christian Science explains that all true consciousness is spiritual and comes from divine Mind. It is a spiritual sense that includes the ability to understand and know God, and it is inherent in everyone as His creation. In reality, spiritual sense is the only capacity by which we discern and express intelligence, honesty, and love. This spiritual sense reveals the “mind of Christ,” which progressively and inevitably destroys the false consciousness of fear, ignorance, and sin, even as light destroys darkness.
Mary Baker Eddy had discovered the divinely natural laws of Spirit, which when applied to our human experience result in healing through spiritual means. The true explanation for all order, progress, and function in man and the universe is not to be found in matter, but in spiritual development derived wholly from God. What the world today calls unexplainable miracles—whether biblical works of God’s power on earth or modern-day Christian Science healings—are actually scientific demonstrations in full accord with divinely metaphysical laws. Eddy writes, “If Christianity is not scientific, and Science is not of God, then there is no invariable law, and truth becomes an accident” (Science and Health, p. 342). Our true health is established in the certainty of Spirit. Therefore, her discovery reinstated the healing power of the Holy Spirit to Christianity.
A critical characteristic of a modern scientific community is the accumulation of scientific proof, or a body of evidence, recorded through edited and archived journals that uphold a certain standard of scientific demonstration. For Christian Science, the laboratory has been the unpretentious lives of those willing to take up the call to follow Christ Jesus in his healing works, even to prove his promise for all time, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do” (John 14:12).
Christian Science relies not on physical experimentation but on scientific demonstrations where God—who is divine Principle, Love—has naturally met the human need for healing. And the Church of Christ, Scientist, through the periodicals established by Mary Baker Eddy, has provided a means of recording over 80,000 testimonies of such healing since 1883. The far majority of these testimonies involve empirical evidence of a return to health in the physical body through the power of Spirit alone.
In accord with the biblical directive that, “in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (II Corinthians 13:1), each account must be verified by at least three peers who can vouch for the individual or who have witnessed the healing. Thousands of these cases were medically diagnosed, and the list of conditions healed by Christian Science is numerous and varied: cancer, tumors, broken bones, cataracts, diabetes, tuberculosis, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, blindness, deafness, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s, and cystic fibrosis, to name a few. One archived testimony even includes a complete healing of albinism (see Verna Rinesmith, Journal, May 1942).
Besides the undeniable evidence of physical healing, these testimonies of gratitude clearly show that an integral aspect of every healing is the increased spiritual understanding of Truth—even a closeness to our Father-Mother God—as our thinking yields to the predominant perfection of infinite Love. Christian Science, as the Comforter promised by Christ Jesus, repeats his words today: “Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works’ sake” (John 14:11).
Mary Baker Eddy’s discovery enabled the practice of effective and repeatable, scientific mental healing. She clearly explained how prayer, a mental activity, could have a scientific effect on the physical body. Since matter is only a formation of erroneous thought, the understanding of Christ, Truth, or the power of omnipotent Love, destroys the false consciousness that causes disease, thus healing physical disease. In view of this, any trust in material remedies for healing would undermine the power of Christ to heal, because inherent in such a trust is the belief that matter needs to be corrected, instead of thought. “If we trust matter, we distrust Spirit,” Eddy writes (Science and Health, p. 234).
Christian Science has been proven, and will continue to be proven, with repeatable, scientific certainty and undeniable demonstrations.
Another important point is that Christian Science healing is not based on the whim or even obligation of God answering one or many prayers. Prayer changes us, not God. Scientific prayer applies the law of Spirit, even the complete allness of divine Love, to the human need, and this reveals more of the spiritual fact that omnipresent and omnipotent divine Life holds spiritual creation—including every man, woman, and child—in eternal perfection. It is this grace of God which defines the scientific reality of all being.
Christ Jesus explained the need to trust in God’s immediate ability and willingness to care for us when he said, “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24). And he proved the divinely scientific power of prayer by “healing every sickness and every disease among the people” (Matthew 9:35). Jesus healed while preaching to receptive multitudes through potent declarations of Truth—and through his sincere, all-embracing, unselfed love. As the sinless Son of God, Christ Jesus was the perfect demonstrator of this Science. And as we grow in our understanding of God, as we cultivate a purer love for others and put off sin—as Christ Jesus taught—then we too are capable of higher demonstrations, even immediate healings. This comes of daily prayer, consistent moral and spiritual growth, and a sincere trust that it is “God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13).
Those who practice Christian Science soon realize that failure, or delay in healing, is not evidence that the Science is at fault. For all proven science, any particular failure to see demonstration in a set amount of time is not the fault of the science but in the human application of it. The incorrect application of the laws of aerodynamics will not result in reliable flight. As it says in Science and Health, “The rule and its perfection of operation never vary in Science” (p. 149). And plenty of healing still occurs quickly.
All healing involves human consciousness yielding to the divine, or a shift of thought outside the realm of mortal measurement and prediction. Instantaneous healing is not uncommon, because Love casting out fear in thought can happen in a moment. And it is not just our own prayers that can bring about healing. The prayers of a Christian Science practitioner for a patient—or healing mental environments during Christian Science church services, lectures, and in nursing facilities—provide a supportive faith in Spirit toward destroying the fetters of fear and false belief that imprison thought.
Christian Science has been proven, and will continue to be proven, with repeatable, scientific certainty and undeniable demonstrations. It verifies the Bible, bearing witness with Christ Jesus, and proves to humanity the existence and love of God. It is the universal remedy, even the Science of Christianity, which meets all human needs. Its proof is not unreliable, miraculous healing, but the repeatable and established results of the natural law of Love, which occur when we turn from matter to Spirit in prayer.
Astronomer Carl Sagan succinctly stated this standard that science must fulfill, saying, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” To the human mind, Christian Science is extraordinary, and so even greater evidence is required for the world to universally accept the verity of Mary Baker Eddy’s truly scientific discovery. It is for this reason she made this promise: “Many years ago the author made a spiritual discovery, the scientific evidence of which has accumulated to prove that the divine Mind produces in man health, harmony, and immortality. Gradually this evidence will gather momentum and clearness, until it reaches its culmination of scientific statement and proof” (Science and Health, p. 380). To hold this promise in our hearts is to gratefully acknowledge the power of omnipotent, unstoppable Spirit at work in each of us today.
