THE GOVERNMENT IS UPON HIS SHOULDER

THE Science of God's good government operates throughout the universe. God, the divine Principle of all being, fills all space and is actively manifesting Himself through His manifold ideas in perpetual harmony, law, and order. The militant atheist, denying God's existence, would dispute this fact. But mortal opinions and beliefs do not touch reality any more than one's belief affects the principle of mathematics.

It is a provable, scientific fact that the basic rules of mathematics are universal and are instantly available to be utilized by anyone who has correct knowledge of them. These rules may be denied, ignored, or unknown, but they remain untouched by ignorant belief and cannot be overthrown by it.

So it is with the ever-operative divine Principle. It is instantly available, and nothing can be added to it or taken from it. It can never be destroyed or nullified by anything that anyone may say, write, or think.

Regardless of the seeming chaos in the world today and the disbelief in God's presence and power, our safety and security lie in our recognition that God is governing and controlling His idea, man and the universe, and that Christian Science, the Science of His government, is equal to any emergency.

God's Word establishes this fact. He revealed Himself to Moses as the great I AM, as the one Ego, or Mind, supplying every manifestation of intelligence to man. The positive assurance of this can come to any individual through studying the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.

One morning the angelic message, "The government is upon His shoulder," came to the thought of a student of Christian Science and brought her a great sense of peace, confidence, and trust. The assurance came with great conviction that regardless of what had seemed to happen in the way of political changes in her country and in other lands, God is still the supreme governing head. His immutable power is always the same. He is undisturbed, untouched by mortal belief or change.

She saw that He is now and ever will be the undeviating, calm, all-intelligent controller and governor of man and the universe and that He is controlling all harmoniously. This salient fact is stated by Mrs. Eddy in her book "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 258): "In divine Science, God is One and All; and, governing Himself, He governs the universe. This is the law of creation: 'My defense is of God, which saveth the upright in heart.' And that infinite Mind governs all things."

The student then thought, If God is governing Himself and the universe, He is including every idea in His harmonious government of Himself. Then, instead of feeling worried and anxiously concerned, all mankind can, if it will, rejoice in the fact that God, divine Love, is reigning over all and is the governing, controlling head. This truth will impel, guide, and direct righteously everyone who recognizes and accepts Love's peaceful control.

However, such peace is not like that recorded by Jeremiah (8:11), "Peace, peace; when there is no peace." God says, according to the prophet Ezekiel (21: 27), "I will overturn, overturn, overturn, it: and it shall be no more, until he come whose right it is." One's constructive thinking of God as the one Father uniting all in one brotherhood helps to establish in one's consciousness the fact of God's righteous government and to displace and counteract the seeming chaos of materialism and the turmoil of destructive human thinking.

No good can ever be obtained by one's talking about human governments in a destructively critical way. Those who are going through a state of malcontent regarding the government of their own country as well as the government of other nations will be helped if they will ponder the Psalmist's words (Ps. 22:27, 28): "All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee. For the kingdom is the Lord's: and he is the governor among the nations."

Confidence and trust in the supremacy of deific power will dispel the fearful, critical sense of government controlled by mortals. Through the spiritual understanding gained in the study of Christian Science, we know that God alone is governing and that "none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?" (Dan. 4:35.)

When we specifically repudiate the general mortal mind beliefs such as ill will and animosity, we are enabled to place ourselves in accord with the infinite control of Deity. Through the understanding of Christ, Truth, we are helping to prove the spiritual fact that God's law alone enables us to solve problems pertaining to humanity as well as to governments. God governs all through the universal activity of the ever-present Christ. God's wisdom, intelligence, and love encircle every idea every moment, whether or not the individual understands and recognizes God's governing, controlling power.

Abraham Lincoln showed in many ways and in many statements that he had an absolute faith in God's guidance and directive power as instantly available everywhere, governing all men simultaneously. In his Farewell Address at Springfield, Illinois, on February 11, 1861, he said, "Trusting in Him, who can go with me, and remain with you and be every where for good, let us confidently hope that all will yet be well."

It is important that those who have learned in Christian Science the spiritual fact of God's governing, directive power operating through man should support understandingly those who stand, to human view, as the heads of government. These individuals should be viewed not as mortals, good or bad, strong or weak, affiliated with one political party or another, but as divine Mind's ideas, receptive to divine guidance and direction, whether they are aware of this fact or not.

Christian Scientists should realize that erring human opinions cannot interfere with divine Mind's controlling power any more than human approval or disapproval can affect the principle of mathematics. Willingness to recognize this and to coincide with God's government is essential. Our beloved Leader, Mrs. Eddy, says (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 278), "To coincide with God's government is the proper incentive to the action of all nations." And she adds, "The government of divine Love is supreme."

The study of the subject of God's governing, controlling power by one's use of the Concordances to the Bible and to the writings of Mrs. Eddy brings peace and assurance and reveals many ways to defend human governments. Students of Christian Science should be alert lest the aggressive elements in human nature, which deny God's presence and power, undermine the religious rights and laws of nations and people.

The spiritual releasing of the forces of God, good, through the applied knowledge of the ever-present supremacy of divine law as revealed by Christian Science will enable men to gain the clear recognition that "the Lord God omnipotent reigneth" (Rev. 19: 6), is All, and that there is no other power.

No opposition to divine Principle or its spiritual idea has any power to affect God or man. God's government can never be touched or overthrown. God is never without His representative, for He is never without the Christ, reflecting and expressing His wisdom, intelligence, and directive ability.

The consciousness of the ever-present law and supremacy of divine Mind permeating the universe and reflected by man brings with it the spiritual conviction that the government is truly upon His shoulder.
