“Have salt in yourselves”

From The Christian Science Journal - July 1, 2015

Original in French

We find salt in perhaps every household on this planet due to its highly prized qualities; it is essential in the preparation of food for man not only because it enhances the taste of food, but also because it helps preserve it. This last quality was extremely important in Jesus’ time.

In his Sermon on the Mount, Christ Jesus, the Master Christian, uses this image: “Ye are the salt of the earth” (Matthew 5:13). He chose this way to show the disciples that their understanding of the Christ was as valuable as the salt that people use. In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy tells us: “A Christian Scientist occupies the place at this period of which Jesus spoke to his disciples, when he said: ‘Ye are the salt of the earth,’  ‘Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.’ Let us watch, work, and pray that this salt lose not its saltness, and that this light be not hid, but radiate and glow into noontide glory.” (p. 367)

About eight years ago, as I arrived in my new home, I was informed that every night rats coming from the sewers invaded the courtyard of the plot and entered into the houses. They would bite the feet of the children as well as of the adults who dared to sleep on the verandas.
