EVER-PRESENT SUPPLY

From the April 1953 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The goodness of God's creation is not a debatable or uncertain condition. It is the unavoidable, inevitable environment in which man finds himself. The abundance of supply—the answer to every need of every nature—is not a gift to mankind by a beneficent and loving Deity; it is not the acquiring of good health or wealth at the expense of toil, struggle, and pain; it is neither an acquisition nor a benefaction. Supply is, rather, a condition of true manhood inseparable from man. The fact that man exists includes the fact that supply exists coincident with him.

Why does the so-called human mind often rebel against such statements of absolute truth? Because this mind accepts evidence which is not trustworthy; it builds belief upon belief and makes a structure which rests upon the shifting sands of material so-called knowledge. And this structure has a false foundation: the desire or willingness to attribute both good and evil to supposed causes outside of man. The simple truth that man is by nature good, that he receives that nature by virtue of his oneness with and his inseparability from God, good, removes the false foundation from mortal mind's structure. Evil is nothing but a belief of so-called mortal mind—not something imposed upon man by an outside circumstance or power.

It is easy to note the effects on men and nations of the belief that evil is imposed or good acquired. In times of stress, when mankind's position has become untenable economically or politically, men' have sought remedies outside of their own thinking and have ignored their inward spiritual opportunity. They have advocated systems of government and business which would impose good by law or rule, make the state a benefactor instead of an instrument, and promote the belief among citizens that good can be added to man and that evil can be subtracted from him as if it had once been real. Dictatorships and false panaceas are built on such foundation stones.
