LET US EMPLOY OUR SUPPLY

From the December 1956 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The problem of supply and employment is one with which mankind has been faced down through the ages. Christ Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount set forth the rule in regard to this problem (Matt. 6:33): "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." Mary Baker Eddy's discovery of Christian Science made this rule clearly demonstrable. Let us see just how this rule operates in the light of this teaching.

Christian Science brings the glad news to mankind that God is ever-present and all-knowing Spirit or Mind. The man made in His image and likeness must therefore be a spiritually mental idea, reflecting all the qualities which belong to God. These include such qualities as wisdom, intelligence, joy, peace, and harmony. To the consciousness unenlightened by this Science, Spirit may seem very dim, far-off, and unsubstantial. The student of Christian Science gains an ever-growing conviction that Spirit, God, is true substance, tangible and real. The truths of being annul the false claims of material sense that man is mortal and material—a part of the Adam-dream. If we do this, our consciousness is purified, spiritualized, and ready to receive God's bounty, which is always present for those willing to accept it. God's bounty includes the true idea of supply and employment.

The order of the unfoldment of supply and employment is somewhat like the order of cause and effect. Just as effect is the expression of cause, employment is the manifestation of supply. The prevailing attitude is that employment is the source of one's supply. But is this actually true? Mrs. Eddy tells us in her "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies." Therefore we see that the source of present supply is spiritual ideas.
