QUIET CHRISTMAS

From the December 1968 issue of The Christian Science Journal

Quiet was the night;
There were no hallelujahs,
No long, loud, brilliant shouts of praise.
Jesus was born: the fact unheralded
But for one lone star which
Bravely,
Humbly
Lighted the way.

Only those with upturned faces,
Only those with heavenward gaze,
Could have seen the celestial signal
That the King of Kings was here.
The promise of the ages,
The healer of the nations,
The God-crowned Christ-idea—
The Messiah—had come!

And only the Wisemen.
Meekly bearing gifts.
Heeded the quiet star
And joined the host
Of cattle and angels
And pure mother
In song of thanks.
