Testimonies of Healing

I wish to testify that since we started relying...

From the February 1989 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I wish to testify that since we started relying on Christian Science in our family over ten years ago, we have had the most wonderful, steady proof of God's care.

One day several years ago, a big bottle of water fell from a shelf onto our very young daughter's foot, severing the tip of one toe. As I wrapped a towel around her foot I asked my son to call my husband at his office and ask him to come home right away. I started to pray immediately as I had learned in Christian Science.

My husband arrived and we put Emily in bed. She was experiencing no pain or fear. While he stayed with her, I turned to the Bible Lesson. The subject of that week's lesson was "Love," and it brought me much inspiration.

Over the next days we prayed steadfastly to see our daughter's true perfection as God's likeness. We found ourselves guided by the following passage from Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 241): "One's aim, a point beyond faith, should be to find the footsteps of Truth, the way to health and holiness. We should strive to reach the Horeb height where God is revealed; and the corner-stone of all spiritual building is purity. The baptism of Spirit, washing the body of all the impurities of flesh, signifies that the pure in heart see God and are approaching spiritual Life and its demonstration." The prayerful support of a Christian Science practitioner was also very helpful throughout this experience.

Not only was Emily completely healed within a few weeks, but her toe was fully restored. It is now impossible to tell which toe was injured.

This healing brought so much spiritual progress to our family. I am most grateful to God for His loving care, for Christ Jesus, and for this wonderful Science that Mrs. Eddy shared with mankind.

I confirm that the healing of Emily took place as described in my wife's testimony. In my prayerful metaphysical treatment of this situation, I dealt mostly with the following thoughts. I was concerned about pain. I wanted to comfort her and, in a deep spiritual sense, I realized that pain is in and limited to mortal mind. By focusing on Emily's perfect spiritual identity, I saw that there was no place for pain. And she never felt any but was always her joyful self.

I was also concerned that Emily would have a portion of her toe missing. This prompted prayerful reflections on the true nature of man's being, and the clear realization came that man is God's embodiment, His complete, spiritual idea, at all times whole. I prayed to have a better understanding of Life and was able to lean upon God wholeheartedly. Emily was soon completely healed.

Beyond the physical healing, all these prayers brought more unfoldment of good. At the time of the incident we had been in Puerto Rico for a few months, and I had been longing for our former church community. I had put Christian Science on the back burner and had concentrated on my work. Our daughter's healing woke me up to the thought that I shouldn't cut off the good in my experience but accept it. I applied for membership in the local branch church and was able to serve there in several capacities.

I am grateful for the growth my family and I have experienced in Christian Science and for the invaluable support received from the Churches of Christ, Scientist, and from teachers and practitioners of Christian Science.
