LUMP IN BREAST—HEALED

From the April 2007 issue of The Christian Science Journal

IN MY YOUTH, school friends queried me with "what ifs" about my religion. "What if you broke your leg? What would you do?" "What if you had an incurable disease?" At that time I attended a Christian Science Sunday School where I learned about God and my relationship to Him.

My answer to my classmates went something like this: "If I had an incurable disease, I'd study and pray to learn more of my relationship with God as the only creator. The Bible says in Genesis that 'God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good' (Gen. 1:31). It doesn't say He created good and bad; just good. And if disease is not good, then it doesn't have life."

Some years later I had the opportunity to prove my convictions. I found a lump in my breast. Several neighbors in our area had recently passed on with breast cancer. I wondered how this could have happened to these lovely women. Instead of wondering about the properties of disease, I should have prayerfully denied any reality to the disease. And I realized this after several days of discomfort.
