Lessons from a fall

From the April 2023 issue of The Christian Science Journal

About a year ago I was cleaning my pool, and while winding up the pool cover I slipped on the wet deck and fell. I slid into the rose bushes beside the pool, which prevented me from going into the gully behind them.

I immediately denied the shock with a strong “No,” and insisted “vehemently on the great fact which covers the whole ground, that God, Spirit, is all, and that there is none beside Him”—words by Mary Baker Eddy in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 421).

I knew that I live in Spirit and not in matter. After I worked my way out from the thorny rosebushes, I climbed up the stairs to the house, forcefully declaring “the scientific statement of being” from Science and Health (see p. 468), feeling the presence of God, divine Mind. I then called a Christian Science practitioner for prayerful support. In spite of the situation, I was so grateful that I had still felt basically protected, without broken bones or swelling. I recalled the reassuring statement from one of my Sunday School teachers when I was a kid: “Only good can happen!”
