Lynn Bingham works at The Mother Church in Boston as Reading Room Ambassador. The following interview covers both familiar and fresh ground, in terms of Reading Rooms and how vital they are for communities all over the world.

Connie Coddington, Manager of Christian Science Practitioner Activities for The Mother Church, recently interviewed Elizabeth Trevithick, a Journal-listed Christian Science practitioner, on what a seeker for healing might expect when first contacting a practitioner. divider What is a Christian Science practitioner? Can you explain some of what you do as a practitioner? First off, Christian Science treatment is not a talking cure.

The following is adapted from “Record of Truth,” a Journal  podcast. Sharing their insights are Janet Horton, a retired Army chaplain; Diane Marrapodi, a Christian Science practitioner and teacher, and currently also the Second Reader for The Mother Church in Boston; and Mark Sappenfield, who was the National News Editor for The Christian Science Monitor  at the time of this interview, but has since been appointed as the Monitor ’s new Editor.

As Manager of Christian Science Practitioner Activities for The Mother Church, Connie Coddington is in touch with practitioners worldwide and hears about their daily challenges, needs, and victories. Recently the Journal  reached out to get Connie’s candid views on the healing practice.

The year 2017 marks an inspiring anniversary in the history of Christian Science: It is 100 years since, in 1917, The Mother Church first endorsed military chaplains in the United States to minister to Christian Scientists serving during World War I. The functions of a military chaplain have evolved over the years, but one thing remains constant: the spiritual leavening that Christian Science chaplains bring to the military.

In June of this year, Annu Matthai presided over the Annual Meeting of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, welcoming church members across the globe with characteristic warmth and grace. And one couldn’t help but notice she was wearing a traditional sari from her native India.
