Supreme Truth Perverted

From the December 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The doctrine that Mind is all, that there is only one Reality and Substance, and this the Infinite God, is easily perverted to the worst of purposes. From this, some force their way to the conclusion that all action and phenomena are good and right and divine. One of this class, speaking of a circus show, said it was a "beautiful manifestation of God." That is quite innocent, and twinkles with mirth. But the principle that all phenomena are manifestations of God sanctifies all impurity and iniquity and covers all moral horrors with the sacred mantle of Deity.

It is just here that Christian Science feels the necessity of the most strenuous maintainence of the doctrine that God is morally and spiritually good, and beautiful, and lovely; and that nothing but these can justly claim to be a manifestation of him. This only is real and true. All else is error and falsity and sin, and is to be repressed and destroyed. It is this which gives importance to the just exposition of the Real and unreal. It must be clearly seen and dwelt upon till deeply felt, that all disharmony, and everything which does not promote moral and spiritual good, are ungodly and unreal, a falsity and illusion, which ought to perish speedily, smitten through with the beam of Truth.
