SALUTATORY

From the September 1886 issue of The Christian Science Journal

The readers of the Christian Science Journal are elsewhere informed of the change which has been made in its management and editorial control. In entering on our new duties we shall rightly be expected to give the salute courteous to our patrons, and thus form with them a sort of initial personal acquaintance.

We are happy to say, at the outset, that the change which has occurred is chiefly one of form. Previous friends and workers are so still, though some of them will do less, and some of them will do more than heretofore. Mrs. Crosse and Mr. Wiggin, it is supposed, will do less, and Dr. Sawyer will do more. To Mr. Wiggin, as to one not dead, we wish to pay the tribute of respect. He has been of recognized service to the Journal. He always does good work; and while his tastes and various other occupations perhaps render it necessary for him in the future to give us less of his time, he will, surely, on occasion, show his hand in our common work.

It is also a great pleasure to be able to assure our readers that there will be no change in the general tone and aim of our Journal. It will continue to be strictly and eminently Christian Scientist, as we have conceived the meaning of that phrase under the tuition of the author of Science and Health, who, let it be observed, is known to us to be far larger than her famous book, excellent as that book is; and we have learned from her lips and general character, not to interpret her printed page in any narrow, or superficial, or bigoted way, but to interpret her broadly, like the ocean, and loftily, like the sky. And this we will do, if God permit.
