Testimonies of Healing

From the April 1906 issue of The Christian Science Journal

I feel compelled to make a public acknowledgment of my healing through Christian Science. From earliest youth I had trouble with my blood, also indigestion; and during several years' stay in a hot climate, fifteen years ago, I was attacked with rheumatism, which developed into a chronic disease and affected my nerves and marrow. The treatment of six physicians, with their medicines and other methods, gave only temporary relief from my suffering, but could not heal the disease. The last of these physicians, a well-known authority in the city of Zurich, declared I had spinal disease with paralysis developing. A partial lameness suddenly appeared in my limbs, which for the most part kept me in the house for over a year. With the help of a cane and by holding on to the walls, I moved about from chair to chair. I took an immense quantity of medicine, applied numberless remedies externally, yet my disease was not even checked; my limbs grew gradually cold and numb, I lost my hold, and the fear that I would live on, a lame man, made me wretched.

My sister in New York, to whom I wrote about my sad condition, answered me that I should turn to Christian Science, but this was something unknown to me. After making inquiries, I went in 1903 to one of their Wednesday evening meetings here; but not knowing, I could not then believe that the power of God could heal the body.

Vexed with the world and vexed that I had gone there, I dragged myself home again, and continued my material treatments until manifold disturbances shook my faith in the efficacy of medicine, and I decided to try Christian Science. Near the end of 1903 I again dragged myself with my wife's assistance to their meeting. I was so weak and trembling that I could hardly stand up, and behold, after I had attended the meetings a few times, my pain dis-appeared; I read the Christian Science literature eagerly and I saw a faint light shine upon my darkness. Each week I walked from these meetings with lighter steps, but there were days when I doubted, and I longed for treatment from a practitioner. Through the understanding of a dear Scientist I have been awakened from the dream of disease into a new sense of Life, into spiritual regeneration, in which the old man with his evil thoughts, habits., and passion, is being "put off." My bodily functions are now all normal, and I can walk freely.
