In the spring of 1910, the subject of Christian Science was presented to me in a very practical way. For eight weeks I had been confined to my home, with a trained medical nurse employed and an attending physician each day. For ten years previous I had been under medical care much of the time, and I had undergone, in these years, what is known in medical circles as three capital operations and a minor one. In the summer of 1909, my condition was pronounced due to Bright's disease, with heart trouble, adhesions of the bowels, and minor complications.
The day of which I first spoke was dark with shadows of hopelessness. I was tired of the struggle, in a material way, for health, and this was the only way of which I then knew. In the afternoon a Christian Scientist came in, and despite my many misgivings as to Christian Science, she gave me a new message, a message that God does not send sickness. She read the ninety-first psalm, and before she had finished, I realized a hope for which I had long looked. I spent that night, bolstered up in bed, reading the Bible in a new light, and by morning I was better. The next day Science and Health came into my hands. This was Thursday. On Sunday I attended a Christian Science service, and on Monday I was again in my schoolroom.
A Christian Science practitioner's services had been asked for, and in nine weeks I was healed of the most feared conditions. In five months I was completely restored to health, a result possible to any one who makes an honest search for the truth and applies the same, as taught in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. The steps from doubt and fear to hope and growing faith were filled with joyous spontaneity. My healing has been a marvelous fact to hundreds, as I was a public worker.
