About thirty years ago I was brought to accept Christian Science and to take class instruction, through two cases of scientific healing which seemed so wonderful to my hitherto skeptical thought that I was impelled to know the reason and Science of the cure, for in the twinkling of an eye my lifelong skepticism had vanished. Though a graduate of a noted university, and the son of pious parents who went in 1833 as missionaries to Africa, I had drifted into rank skepticism, or so-called atheism and infidelity, in a vain endeavor to reach a reasonable religion.
It remained for the fruitage of the healings spoken of not only to cure me of infidelity to scientific and spiritual truth, but to heal me of poor health. Of the many physical cures effected by Christian Science in my case, I will mention only two,—eye trouble and erysipelas. The latter ailment in its worst form had visited me annually for over fifteen years, but was obliterated in a week through the application of the truth by one of Mrs. Eddy's students. As to material vision, so called, the best of oculists and opticians kindly told me after technical examination that my eyes were so far wasted it was useless to spend any time or money for their restoration, as I would surely be blind within a specified time.
Thanks to Christian Science and the continued study and application of the truth as found in the inspired text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, my sight has retained its utility for over twenty-five years, and I am no more concerned for my eyes, once regarded as supersensitive, for any other portion of the body. This deserved tribute is due from me to Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science, as it is from all beneficiaries of this grand truth, the panacea for all human ills, for "earth has no sorrow that Love cannot cure" (Hymnal, p. 298).
