Testimonies of Healing

When Christian Science was first...

From the November 1927 issue of The Christian Science Journal

When Christian Science was first presented to me nearly twenty years ago I was greatly in need of mental and physical healing. Christian Science meant something more than this healing, for it helped me to find God. I had been an active church worker for years, but became dissatisfied with my understanding of Deity. I awakened to the fact that after years of beseeching God for blessings, only twice could I remember my prayers having been answered; but, because those occasions stood out so clearly, I realized that these prayers had been more nearly in accord with the Christian Science method. I had on these occasions touched divine Principle, but not understanding what actually had taken place in my thinking, I was unable to repeat it until I learned the method in Christian Science.

In the process of this mental evolution I decided that it was presumptuous to ask God to change, simply that mere human desires might be gratified. Not knowing what else to do, I ceased to pray and scarcely attended church. Often when looking up into the tropical skies, where the stars seem so near and the nights so wonderful, I remember declaring that there must be a God, and somewhere, sometime, I should know the truth about Him.

When the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was placed in my hands I read it scarcely understanding its meaning, yet unable to let it alone. After reading the book three times I found myself saying, "It is too good to be true." But I soon found it was true and very good. At once I began to improve mentally and physically. The first thing I noticed was the quickening of the reasoning powers. When I became aware of the fact that God made everything that was made, I declared that it made no difference what my body looked like within or without, there was nothing of which to be afraid. The abnormal conditions then gradually disappeared, and false beliefs about life were corrected.
