THE POWER OF GOD, GOOD

From the May 1929 issue of The Christian Science Journal

NO body of Christians have a better understanding of the power of good than Christian Scientists. And the reason simply is that no body of Christians have a clearer understanding than Christian Scientists of the truth that God is infinite good. Others may theoretically admit this truth, and have a certain amount of faith in it, but to the Christian Scientist it is fundamental in all his thinking. It. is the truth upon which an unwavering faith is based, and which is demonstrable in the overcoming of all manner of evil.

It was Mrs. Eddy who in 1866 discovered that since God is infinite good, evil is unreal. No discovery of greater importance has ever been made; but like nearly every other great discovery, its significance was not at first realized. Nevertheless, men have been gradually coming to admit it as Christian Science has continued to urge its acceptance upon them, and as they have proved for themselves the power of good over evil. Very often the power of good is demonstrated first of all in the healing of disease, which is an evil belief; and this proof gives the necessary assurance to the one healed to proceed with the study of Christian Science, and to apply its rules to the solution of every problem which supposititious evil may present to him.

The Christian Scientist has to be constantly on guard lest he forget that good alone is real and has power. When those uninstructed in divine Science meet, they are prone to speak of evil and its effects: disease is a frequent topic with them; the escapades of the criminal afford scope for the unbridled imagination; and even the weather, especially if it be not of the kind which is generally regarded as propitious, lends itself to expressions of fear and anxiety. The Christian Scientist has to watch that he fall not back to this material level; for to do so is to forget God's allness and evil's nothingness.
