After many postponements, I feel that I must pay a just debt of gratitude to Christian Science, though I also feel that this debt is most difficult to repay even in part. Perhaps the best way this obligation may be partially fulfilled is through an acknowledgment of the lessons learned. One of these lessons has resulted in an increased sense of gratitude, not alone for the benefits received, but for enlightenment regarding the operation of divine Principle, Love. This illumination has been revealed to me in more and more frequent manifestations of the presence and power of the unseen God—good. I have found that divine Principle is always active and is seen to operate on our behalf as we let go our outlining and know that we can do nothing of ourselves.
My first interest in Christian Science was aroused twenty-five years ago, when I sought it as a healing agency after I had consulted the most renowned medical practitioners in New York city without benefit. I am grateful for their kindly efforts. I was suffering from a very distressing form of nervous trouble which manifested itself in severe head pains and extreme neuralgic conditions.
I shall never forget the first visit I made to a Christian Science practitioner. After giving me treatment, he told me that my birthright is dominion. That meant nothing to me then, but it has become more and more of a reality through the years. This practitioner then lent me the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and encouraged me to read it. I read about one hundred pages and returned it with a letter stating that I could get nothing out of it.
